howdy,

I am going to upgrading my system soon and there are a few things I'm unsure about.

I've decided on 3 main things so far...
cpu - Q6700
graphics card - 9800gtx+
ram - OCZ Vista Gold 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Series DDR2

I've been looking at doing this for a while and was considering getting the only Abit mother board sold on ocuk but I just checked and it's no longer being sold.

so I have to find an alternative now....
if anyone could recommend a mobo for me that's compatible with those components that'd be awesome. (I would like the best that £70-80 will get me ;) )

nice one chaps

Quick question, the ram you have posted in your build is £39.99 which runs at 800mhz. Same brand, pretty much same memory by the looks of it http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-149-OC is £34.49 but runs at 1066mhz.

The only thing that looks different is that the latencies are slightly lower on your ones (More expensive ones).

I'm not sure how much difference clock speed vs latencies actually makes.

I don't upgrade very often so when I do I try and get the best bang for my buck, I'd pretty much written off AMD for the moment because I was under the impression that Intel were still superior (I just want something rather fast) I don't really know much about it so I'm just going with what I know, it's certainly something to consider though.

as for the mobos, I was looking at the Asus one a little while ago thinking it looked quite good, if there's even a sniff of a problem I'd rather go with a safer option. however, I don't mind changing the ram that I get. as long as it's 4 gb ddr2 and 800mhz it doesn't really matter to me.

just at a glance i've selected this set: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-026-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=

I'd rather give Asus a try this time as I have a gigabyte mobo at the moment and I'm not a huge fan of it tbh, I'm open to reasons why I should or should not get Asus though...

man, i was too slow marc :-) I'm not sure how Ram works really, I was vaguely hoping that I'd be able to use the 2 gig of ddr2 ram that I already have along with the new 4 gig, probably find that I can't though... it's geil 800mhz but aside from that I don't really know any more. if I can't run them together I spose I might as well get something faster

I've never had a problem with Asus in all fairness. I've used cheapo memory in it and more expensive stuff, seems to handle them.

I have read some things about OCZ and Asus but as you have posted, there are plenty of other types of memory.

I've just bought 2gb of that memory but the 1066mhz version, it's running great along with an AMD 7750 on an Asus board.

*EDIT - I think if you want to run the memory you have with the new stuff, they will have to be the same speeds and more than likely the same latencies. I guess voltage could also be a problem, some ram needs more volts than others to run stable.

this is what I put together OP, many people prefer the 4850 to the 9800gtx apparently its better in some situations and it's cheaper. The memory is the same price but a better kit and i've included a cooler so you can overclock if you wanted too later on down the line.

I've been reading up on tri cores briefly, and i found something saying that they weren't designed to be 3 cores but they're quads that have one defective/disabled core... it was written in 2008 though so I don't know what the deal is now.

the main thing i'm thinking is why have 3 cores when I can have 4 for a little bit more money? I don't mind the little extra cost if I'm getting something good quality.

also, I had been looking around for a while and it did seem like the 9800 gtx+ was pretty much the best card for the money, especially seeing as I've found one for under 100 squid so I'm going to go for that.

the ram you've shown though (spok) looks as if it would be good, the ocuk bundles feature asus mobos and corsair ram quite a lot so it probably works well :-)

I've had my Q6600 for ages and I'm glad I went for Quad. As you said, there isn't much price difference in them, if you can have an extra core for a little extra, why not?

I only do a bit of editing but it's nice to see all those 4 cores being used up and gaming, it's just as good even though most games will only make use of 2.

I'd stick with your 9800GTX+ and the Quad tbh.

nice one guys, this has been informative and helpful :-)
looks like I'm going to go for:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6700 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.66GHz
Asus P5QL Pro Intel P43 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR2 PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x2GB) Dual Channel Kit
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
and the lovely 9800gtx+

cheers for all your help.
