I kindly got a mobo/chip and memory for free off a member off here to build a cheap system.
anyway put the system together on saturday and it booted up no bother so i went to install the os and after the initial set up when it re boots i got the message error loading operating system so i thought that the drive was knackered so i tried it on another drive with the same result...

So i managed to get another 2 versions of xp of mates and tried that i thought my disk must have been knackered....But same result...So i did a search on the net and i got this page up http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326676 ....

Anyway i reset the cmos which over the years and on many computers i have done loads of times now the system wont post at all...It spins up all the lights come on but nothing on the screen.....Any ideas

Could possibly be that theres not enough volts going to the ram, try with one stick to see if you can get in bios, then you can change to the correct voltage close down and insert the remaining sticks - That's assuming you have more than one stick of ram.

The boot fail might be that down to you not setting it correctly in bios.

Check in Bios to see if the hdd is showing.

Listing the full spec might be more helpfull...

it was posting before i reset the bios now i cant get it to post all ...I am away from home till the weekend so i cant mess about with it till then so i was just trying to get a few ideas for when i get back on friday....

Try it with the very least equipment plugged ina s possible then if you have any spare kit try each of the components, if not it could be anything failing, did you change ny of the bios settings or just reset them?

just reset the bios . . Removed the power cable then the battery and moved the jumper over to clear the cmos . . Ill try it with one stick of memory and one hard drive when i get home . . And a different gfx card see if that makes any difference
