System as per sig, apart from the GTX 470 (which I've just sold and replaced with a HD5870). Went to power up after switching the gx cards, I got a second of power then dead, although the power light on the m/board is still lit.

Suspected it was the new card but I've now got that working ok on an old 775 system I've borrowed off a mate.

So far I've tried 3 different gx cards, 2 PSUs, taken out the board, reseated CPU/RAM, tried one memory stick at a time, reset BIOS. Simply won't power up for more than a second.

I have no other x58 board I can get access to, unfortunately.

Any other things anyone suggest I could try before I have to bite the bullet and RMA the board?

try reflowing the chipset.
just cover all the thing that will melt and stick it in the oven for 5-10 mins, itll reform the solder, so its worth a shot

Thanks for the feedback so far. Possible short is certainly what I've been thinking too. Tried running outside the case with no success. Inspected the board farily closely for any scorch marks and really can't find anything.

nkata, could a failed battery really stop it booting altogether? Will give it a go anyway, thanks.

Anything else you can think of, guys?

Jeez that sound's scary

Surely if the board is within warranty (only 6 months old) it's not worth the risk??

Like I said, a long shot, may be losing settings between boots of there is no battery backup. I would have thought that it should still post though even with base settings.

andy.

I think trying the reflow thing would be a bad idea. it's possible that installing the new card cracked a line on the board but you'd invalidate your warranty.

What happens with no graphics card? Same?

You could also try one if the other pci express slots with the grfx card.

Tried all the other PCI-e slots, no go. Haven't tried it with no card at all though, very long shot but I'll give it a go, cheers.

I feel for you matey, any luck without the card in so far? it must be the board if that dont work, its the only thing that has not been swapped out.

I got a spare board after my new build today which i was gonna say you could borrow to try but just seen your location which is miles from me lol.

Hope you get it sorted mate

Cheers for the offer, mate, much appreciated. Just cloning my HDD so I can screw around with the copy on the borked setup, then I'll give all the ideas I haven't tried so far a go and post back.

Major success:):) Just gave everything a good spray with some compressed air (no idea if this did any good), tried starting up with no power cables to the gx card and it started. Re-attached the power, I'm now back up and running. No idea really what has changed but who cares.

Never been so relieved in the 17 years or so I've been messing around with this stuff.

Off to ASDA to get a few beers to help me calm down :D

Thanks for all your help, people, I love you all.
