system wont recognise external usb hard drive

running fresh install of winxp pro 32bit sp3, plugged in my external hd and it comes up as not recoginised, and windows says its encountered an error with a usb device, works fine on another pc.

light comes on with the drive, so seems to be getting power, and other devices work in the usb slot.

any ideas what it might be ?

is it powered from the usb slot? (ie it's a laptop hard drive (really small))

try one at the back of the pc, or a powered hub

its powered from the usb slot, and its connecting to a laptop.
