Hi,

Im interested in doing a TEFL qualification so that I can go abroad and teach english or even do it here in the UK...

I have no degree..

If I went abroad would I earn a half decent wage to get by etc and then move on to another country..

Countries I am interested in teaching at are:- fareast, europe

Does anyone have any knowledge or know anyone who has taught english abroad with just the T.E.F.L and not having a degree?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Cheers!!

Hi

I have a Cert. TESOL. I did mine a few years ago at Aberystwyth University - http://www.aber.ac.uk/language+learning/certesol.htm. Excellent course, although quite expensive. The fee for the course is £1000 plus £100 for the Trinity college examination fee.

If you want to teach in Japan you will need a degree to get a work visa. There are ways around it but it is a pain - loads of information on the web. China will take anyone, if you have a TESOL qualification you will get the better paid jobs. Be warned, some employers in China will take you for a ride. You will get better advice here: -

My advice, definitely do a qualification but not one of these Mickey Mouse weekend courses, waste of bloody time. If you want to teach in Europe go to Poland, hot women and cheap beer. ;)

My friend is currently working in Spain. She did the quickie/Mickey Mouse TEFL and doesn't have a degree. She had no problems securing a job in Europe (within 2 days of finishing an online and weekend course). She's having an absolute ball now. She couldn't get a job in most of the Far East because of the lack of degree though.

I have a degree and a TEFL and am currently in Korea where having a degree was a requirement of employment (no degree - no visa!). The job is good fun and easy, the pay is awesome, accommodation is provided and the country is ok. I'd highly recommend it just as a way to see a different part of the world.

If you can afford the proper TEFL, do that. If money is short and you want to leave soon, then a Mickey Mouse TEFL will still get you job offers when combined with a good CV.

I've not done it but I have a couple of links for you that may be of use. These people will give you the tefl and arrange a placement (all for a price of course). I think it depends on what country you go to as to weather you need a degree.

I-to-i will give you a TEFL, but they charge a fee to find a placement. it just isn't needed - It's really easy to apply yourself by using the hundreds of TEFL job boards. You should NEVER pay to let someone else find a job for you. The prices are usually between 400 - 2500 to let a company do something anyone can do for free (with very little effort!).

I was paid £100 a week in Poland, that's the same wage a doctor gets! Teaching abroad will never earn you big money, just a comfortable lifestyle.

im considering doing the TEFL this summer and then going away sept 08 onwards....

from what i saw SPAIN pay £1,000 a month even if you do the mickey mouse course...

Now if they pay your accomodation and give you 2 meals thats not bad money hey...

where can i do the T.E.F.L in London without being ripped off?

all thoughts would be appreciated

cheers!!

In Prague you could probably get about 25,000 to 30,000CZK (£710-£850) NET a month in a school. There are loads of language schools in Prague.
If you needed a bit extra money you could do private lessons for abour 250-300CZK (£7-£8.50) an hour. If you have a Engineering or IT background you can probably charge a little more.

I'm not exactly sure on the pay to be honest as I've never had anything to do with TEFL here but those are the general 'starter' wages in the city for English speakers so it's a guide at least.
have a look at www.expats.cz for more TEFL information in Prague/Czech.

is that just with the T.E.F.L and without having a Degree from the U.K.?

I have a strong I.T. aswell as Purchasing (import/export) background...

I will check out that link..

thanks a lot :)

Also consider doing some sort of Business TEFL module to teach those who want to speak business English. You can make lots lots more money this way, hosting out of hours classes etc.

I'd probably say that was the basic for just TEFL holders. If you have a strong IT background then you could also offer private lessons specialising in IT for more, how much more I have no idea as it's not my field. There are also many English speaking companies with large offices or HQs here due to the good balance between cheap labour and being a modern city, because of this you have quite a few Czech people wanting to learn or improve their English. The market seems to be quite well covered though because there are lot of language schools and private ads for lessons but I'm sure you can find enough out to see what's available.
