Can anyone shed any light on these - opinions etc?

I'm about to renew with T-Mobile, and have got used to being able to use MSN Messenger, listen to MP3s and read eBooks off my SDA, but I fancy something a bit more exciting.

Does the Compact II play tracks in backwards-alphanumeric order like the SDA does? It's maddening!

Ta!

dont believe so, will look for u tomoro. having used the compact i wouldnt recomend it. the Vario is a lot better and has a slide out QWERTY k/board though it is a little bigger

The compact is a little more than irritating for writing text messages in (using the keyboard which i find to be the best option) expecially in a moving vehicle. Apart form that I find it to be a good phone, although I think I'd go for the newer version.

What other input methods are there for writing text messages, then? Does it allow any kind of writing with the stylus (like Palm's Graffiti)?

The freehand to TXT err 'thing'?
Ive got the MDA compact, but to be totally honest I havent really used it yet though, the free hand to txt input is fun though :D

i assume you mean plays tracks as in music? you realise, just like for PC, there are many programs available to use as your media player on both windows mobile smartphone version and the pda version? :p But windows media player on the pda version that the mda compact runs on is far better than the smartphone version, breaking things up into albums / artist / playlists :) I have the orange spv m500 which is essentially the MDA compact and moved to it from the spv c500, which is essentially the SDA in a different shell, and it's a massive upgrade.

For text messages, you have a few handwriting recogition modes, a mini keyboard which is quite small though, and this is my favourite:

It really is a fantastic phone imo :) If had a bit more ram, and inbuilt wifi instead of having to use an SDIO card, it'd be spot on (nowt like this atm without the bloody extra bulk of the vario :()

If you have any more questions, feel free to add me on MSN

Tom.

I have a MDA compact and i love it. I have XCOM, Elite, Megadrive,NES,SuperNes,GBA and even the Playstation running on it.
The playback of movies is fantastic as the screen is very good. The only thing I am not really impressed with is the camera, but its still OK in a way. Adobe Acrobat reader for PPC 2.0 is available for download now. :D

very good as i explained on msn :) can easily get 3-4 days of normal usage out of it.

Tom.

Odd, I'm lucky to get a day out of it.

I have it charging via usb when I am at work, and likewise when at home, but then I listen to mp3s or watch movies when I travel, which chows batteries.

Make sure you have IR beam and bluetooth turned off too, they chow battery even worse.

I'm hoping my Vario's battery does better

yesterday, i made a few phone calls, watched a feature length film and listened to music for 6 hours with a bit of GPRSing, and it still was reporting 1/3rd battery....and that's with pretty much constant hammering :) With normal usage like you would use a normal phone i can happily get 2-3 days out of it.

1 hour journey to work, mp3s playing, I get to work at 85%.

1 hour trip home playing movies (backlight on), get home anywhere between 73-68%

EDIT - Sorry, were you referring to your Vario? If so, woot!! :D

krooton, I'm hoping they were referring to MDA Compacts or equivalents :p Which one is yours?

Also, in your travels do you ever go out of the network's range (or in a low reception area), as phone batteries are often severely depleted as they cry out with higher and higher powered signals to try and lock onto a base station.
