T60 and USB External HDD

Bought a T60 from Amazon, 80GB HDD. What externals work with this? Have not used a lappy in about 8 years. Could I get a Seagate 2TB USB2/3 3.5" desktop hard drive, plug it in and it works? Or do I need to look for a specific type of external?

Surely any usb external works ? You could even replace the internal cdrom drive with a 2.5" caddy for a 2nd internal hdd.
