Tablet & Drawing/painting software combo for 8 year old?

Been looking at the Intuos tablet but not sure about software.

I have a Wacom tablet that my sons uses, I have Photoshop CS6 which is a bit OTT for him to try and use, GIMP is free, that's pretty decent. Other than that I not to clued up any more.

The hand-eye co-ordination take a while to get used to because you are looking at the screen not your hand like in normal drawing.
