tablets to replace PCs?

Because people want the features. It's a balance and as allready showin in stats. people wont portability over pure power, size or anything else.

its seen as a fashion accessory now due to the iphone/ipad popularity. that isn't long term proof it will become something everyone wants. netbooks were the best thing ever when they first came out, and then people realised they were too small and pointless. once the novelty of the apps wears off, your left with nothing of any real substance.

I suppose so. But then they would already be declinign (which they probably are but so slowly it's not noticeable) Desktops have a lot more uses than just the consumer grade side of it. Tablets probably won't migrate into the business sector etc since they aren't really specialized but are more general use and for those whom have little to know idea about computing at all...

Tablets are allready migrating into the business side and that's iPads, let alone a more flexible iOS. That's not to say business are just going to use tablets. But tablets are going to complement their it system.

As I said well come back in a few years time, they are far from a fashion statement.

How and what we do on computers has changed and we are in a transition phase. Industry has seen this. Most people have seen this. Some of you can't for some reason.
Look at any prediction on mobile computing is going to continue on its trend to take over as the biggest market share by some way.

They are massively more popular than netbooks ever were. You and others have to realise not everyone thinks like people on here, they just want to browse and email, and so forth. They don't need proper work or gaming machines.

Tablets fit in here perfectly and effortlessly, they aren't going anywhere. Just as desktop PCs aren't going anywhere for power users.

we will indeed. but I don't think it will be the household item you seem to think it will. hybrids WILL replace laptops because the companies will stop making laptops not because its what people want. but most will never get split into tablet form.

The desktop pc is still strong in the corporate market with vdi and other virtual technologies its only real competition. I am yet to find any corporations ditching desktops and going for ipads for example. Although some corporations are switching from blackberry devices to smartphones/tablets and from laptops to tablets for home and mobile use.

But tablets are blergh.... iPads are god awful in all fairness (mainly due to IOS... horrible horrible OS...) the Droid OS is so much better for anyone who actually knows what they are doing... and even if they are they are mainly going to be flashy things for presentations not day to day work.

im not saying people wont keep buying tablets, im saying that its peaking now as its the 'must have' accessory. but it will fade off when people realise a 7"-10" screen is too small, and anything bigger negates the portability so might aswell just have a laptop that has a CD/DVD/BR Drive and built in keyboard and wont require a docking station to do anything useful.

Cd/DVD/blu-ray drive. They are essential dead formats, that haven't been told they are yet.
This is the digital age.
And even if you have rubbish Internet, at some point companies are going to change to USB/Sd storage devices for physical media. So they can be used on any device.

I have always seen tablets as too big too be ultra portable (same with most laptops) and the only use of it i could see is a glorified remote. Say I had a htpc (another market for desktops) and i could walk around my house controlling my systems with my tablet and sit on my couch and control the projector with it etc. But using a tablet for anything significant is not plausible. It is just too uncomfortable and the screen is too small. Try and write a book for example on a tablet or browse the web for 12 hours, you will get neck strain, unless you hang it from the roof or get a bit of plastic to prop it up or use it to plug in to other devices and then we are back to a glorified and overpriced remote.

then you better tell BT they have to get a move on then, as the download speeds are awfull around here and that isn't going to change for a lot of villages for a long time. so those people are going to be excluded from anything. I love this philosophy, its going to go down really well in places not in the city.

iOS is not 'horrible' on the iPad, you may think so but the app and music/film support is currently the best by quite a large margin and they are rather important on tablets at the moment.

For people who would look to replace a PC/laptop with a tablet, iOS is more than adequate, in fact it's probably the best for them.

are you allowed to change anything in iOS? have a custom version of iOS? last I knew it wasn't possible. Droid OS is miles ahead of iOS. But droid tabs are more focused on OS over hardware where as the iPads are more of a hardware thing than OS...

Dunno what you are smoking dude. I don't really like Apple but most people know it is the other way around.

Android = Hardware/open software

iOS = software/apps

Although Android has been getting better since ICS & JB.
