tablets to replace PCs?

but people will have multiple items regardless. unless you and your 2 daughters can take the same hybrid to work/school at the same time  I think you completely miss the point. I think people will have 1, read it, 1 static machine, beit a desktop or laptop, that stays in the home, and then their own devices to take away. that is not multiple items at all, as they would all need portable devices whether there is a static machine or not.

If your going to have multiple devices, then it still doesn't stand to reason why you would splash out on a static device. Why would you?

So when your two daughters want to take a computer out, what you going to do send them out with at desktop? The same applies regardless of number off people. One device does everything. Or if you need multiple devices for multiple people. You buy a one device fits all two or three times.

because it, in my opinion, is easier to have a desktop already there with all the files, programs etc on it, than having a monitor, KB/M say on a desk with a docking station.

But more expensive, and less tlime used.as your going to have to buy multiple devices.

Files can allready be there. I think you'll find few people need the storage you talk of. Even then you just have an external drive. How is it any easier?

I think your stuck in the old way of doing things, people always had a desktop so that can never change. It has changed and continuing to change. The way computers are used is changing and will continue to change.

So you're a business user? Not a standard user then? You'll probably end up with a "transformer" instead. One that may have a removable keyboard but will almost certainly also include a touch screen.

I'm not claiming to be representative of the market, I'm simply explaining that from my own point of view I don't particularly like tablets especially if there might be extended periods of typing (albeit you can get round these limitations to an extent). You may be right and at some point I'll have to get a transformer style system but that'll be through lack of alternatives rather than preference since the touchscreen functionality isn't likely to be all that beneficial for me. The business perspective is illustrative rather than necessarily indicative of my current use.

Have you used a tablet? Do you ever consume media?
A lot of people said that and have swiping over. My sister thought I was mad, why would I want a tablet when you can have a laptop. She's not tetchy. Shes now has a tablet. My parents are hankering over one, but Im making them wait for win8.
There will be some die yards, that will refuse to change, but IMO most peoples opinions will or allready have changed.

Yes, I've used tablets based on Android and Apple operating systems - my dad now has an Android based tablet that he uses regularly and thinks it's great so it's not as if I'm completely unaware of them or what they can do. I just don't want one, I'm not saying they're useless or that they don't have a place but they're not something I want or feel I need.

As for consuming media - I'm assuming you mean do I ever use iPlayer/4OD or stream music etc? The answer is yes and my laptop does it perfectly well, I can't see how a tablet would possibly do it so much better as to negate the drawback of not having a keyboard for my uses.

any media? Web browsing, films, music anything.

Laptops are to clumsy and aren't comfortable to use on sofa or bed IMO.
Keyboard issue again will be sorted out when win8 is released as will the limitation of the Os currently found in IOS and android.

Do you browse on the sofa? Wouldn't you much prefer to use a tablet for that?
Then have no drawback and plug it in to a keyboard which you couldn't tell wasnt a laptop?

I hate this term "media consumption", it sounds like something EA would say.

I don't consume media, I watch it, read it, play it and listen to it.

I use my laptop everywhere, sofa, bed, kitchen etc and never had any issues with it being clumsy as I can put it on a surface. what would annoy me is having to HOLD a tablet constantly or get a hybrid (which in this state would just be a laptop that can come apart).

So you can lounge out on the sofa and use a laptop? I don't think so. You have to sit in certain positions to use it as it has to be supported.

You can lie in bed and use a laptop? Again no, arms and hands aren't designed to bend in that way. Unless again you limit yourself to certain positions.

So try again.

Lol you jsut said why they are clumsy, you need a surface to use it. Be a table or lap. Now try lying down or sobbing out on a sofa and using it?

Try lying face down on a bed and having laptop in front off you?
See its very impractial isn't it?

Now if I'm at a desk can just use a smat desk or keyboard case Andrew I can still use it all these other positions.

Well it's true to some extent... my average 15" laptop is not the most comfortable to use in bed... typing is relatively awkward no matter which position I get in. Plus, it's heavy and gets warm. My tablet is much better for youtubing and browsing with light typing.

if I want to type on my laptop I go into the living room, sit on the sofa, and use it there.

Yes that's also a point... holding a tablet can be annoying after a while.

This point is what puts me off more than most. Having used a tablet for awhile on the sofa, I found it VERY annoying that I constantly had to hold it up. And when I needed to type anything on it, that was a whole different problem.

no I have to sit there and hold the damn thing, to me that is more clumsy and annoying than having something say on a surface that only requires my hands to do something, not to constantly hold it.

You don't need to constantly hold a tablet, you get a choice. No such choice on a laptop. Again your lack of thinking shines through..

Now go lie in bed and use your laptop.. How comfortable is it to write? Good luck wrists.

how do you get a choice?!?! where can I put my TABLET (not hybrid you keep stating TABLET as this is oh so much more portable than a laptop, if it was a hybrid then it would be exactly the same problem as a laptop would have) so I don't have to hold it but can still use it?

far more comfortable than using a stupid touchscreen keyboard that's for sure. and I have this wonderful thing I do, its called sitting up. helps no end when typing.

Yes, I use my laptop for all those things and it works perfectly well. Rarely do I find it uncomfortable but even on the odd occasions it is less than ideal the positives of having a full size keyboard attached outweigh the disadvantages for me.

I do sometimes browse on the sofa and no, I wouldn't prefer a tablet for that although I've used other peoples tablets to see if I did think it was a better option. I just don't find the benefits outweigh the negatives for me, I'm not suggesting I'm typical or that my use should be the model for everyone but a tablet isn't something I want or need no matter how the question is phrased.

Exactly, the more portable end of the laptop market are more than suitable to use on a sofa or a bed.

I've said it before in another thread, I think the future lies in laptops with touch screens, not just tablets. The physical keyboard isn't going anywhere imo.

No a hybrid is not a laptop. It's just as portable. It gives you the choice.
