Tablets with ads or no ads!?

I've just noticed on Amazon they are selling tablets either with ads, which is cheaper, or no ads.

Apparently the ads appear on the lockscreen.

How long as this been a trend?

Just Fire and Kindle devices isn't it? and you can pay to have them removed later. Not a big fan of that approach, the intention is one thing but quite ripe for abuse.
