Can anyone recommend any decent lines of tableware and cutlery that are decent quality?

We're currently rolling with a mishmash of about 5 different basic supermarket sets left over from when me and the lass were students.

I'm looking for porcelain/china as I've read it tends to be more durable. Plain white for the tableware and simple designs for the cutlery. Ideally I'd like to pick something from a well known brand with a long running line so that if I drop one I can just buy a single to make up the set.

Bit of a girly request, but suggestions are appreciated.

Viners for cutlery Usually have a 50% off code or similar, but they've just redesigned website and I can't see any space for vouchers.

Tableware no idea, I still haven't found anything I like at a Resonable cost.

Yeah Viners are good I got a set about 15 years ago, have replaced lost ones with generic stainless steel ones from a local store. Any full stainless steel cutlery should last for ages and will work out much cheaper in the long run.

I got a set not that long ago a year or so. Lost every single one of the 16 forks somehow. Think flatmate eats them or something. Annoyingly they no longer do that range :(. So if I want a set I'll have to buy a new make.

I like the look of angle ones.

Good weighty feel and 10 year warranty though.

Edit - wow almost two years ago.

Tableware is annoying me though. I need to find something I like.

How much do you want to spend on tableware and how big a set? Denby is hard to beat and if you look around you can get some good deals on box sets. I've bought from this place before and they have sales quite often. I've got Denby stoneware myself but the porcelain is supposed to be of a similar durability. They are currently doing a 16 piece set for £60 which is a bargain (it seems Denby themselves are doing it for the same price in their sale too).

The Denby/Viners stuff looks like what I was after.

Kinda worried about buying something like John Lewis's own stuff in case when I go back in a couple of years to replace all the forks I've thrown in the bin, I find out they don't do them any more and I need to buy a full set.

John Lewis do a number of very decent own-brand ranges, but you can pick up a half-decent set from most stores these days. Just watch for forks with thin stems that bend at the slightest pressure - generally the bane of a cheap set.

Get yourself a decent budget white service set without patterns or special finishes and spend the rest of your funds touring charity shops. If you pick up a load of crockery of all different shapes and sizes where every piece is different, it's very simple to replace one with another random piece.

And that slightly haphazard approach is very 'in' right now, apparently.

If there's one thing Ikea are rubbish at, it's cutlery. I've never found a set where every piece was a pleasure to use - about all they can consistently get right is teaspoons, and even then they try their hardest to get them wrong.

Much more like it - a very good set for the money. Their RONDO service is excellent, but pricey.

Everyone refreshes their range from time to time. JL is no different in that regard.

About the only design that remains on the shelves from year to year is the Robert Welch stuff. I've got a set from over 20 years ago that is all but identical to a set in the current range.

You'll have that problem anywhere, it's called fashion! :P

I think you'll find John Lewis stuff will last a lot longer than most places, especially longer than cheap light crap from Ikea. You can get some decent budget ranges at John Lewis too, the green value packaging.

I've seen quite a few WMF sets in TKMaxx recently. Seem nice.

I'm in the same position myself in terms of cutlery and tableware. Having just moved to my own place and just brining the bits I had at University leaves me rather short on a lot of kitchen things.

Although I am tempted by the cheapy Ikea tableware. :D

I saw some in TKMaxx this week ,just days after buying the same brand in John Lewis for twice the price!:(

I recently bought THIS cutlery set from Argos, half price @ £24.99 for 8 place settings. Its a nice weight, and comfortable to use. Best cutlery set I've had, and I've had a fair few - received great compliments on it from the family who were round at New Year.

WMF cutlery is indeed very nice. I have a full set of steak knives and forks, got them years ago when I lived in Germany and they are still as new now.

The people suggesting the Ikea tableware, is it really that durable? I have to say the only tableware I have come across that is genuinely durable (e.g. you can drop it or knock it against things without it chipping/breaking) are the more expensive brands. I went through loads of sets of cheap stuff before realising it was a false economy.
