Has anyone tried Taekwondo ?? There is a new school starting near me and I really fancy giving it a go. I did Kung Fu for about three years but since the school closed I really have missed it so this is a good opportunity to get back into Martial Arts training. How does this differ from other martial arts in terms of it' intensity etc ?

depends on the club, i'm no expert but done a bit of it. it is a fun MA imo if you find a more "sports" based taekwondo that focuses a lot on conditioning, flexibility and technique and sparring. This can be very intense often getting you in to a massive sweat and involving a lot of cardio before trying to stretch your legs as much as possible.

Whereas a more defense orientated class would probably not be anywhere near as intense.

Did about 4 years worth in the past. Great for fitness and flexibility. Generally it's better as a sport than as a self defense system, though it can be argued it has its uses. However in 4 years I never got taught any real take downs or groundwork, something which is a problem from a self defense point of view.

As a introduction to martial arts as a whole it's great but I recommend cross training in a close combat jujitsu/grappling style at some point as well to give your fighting some balance in case (or rather when) things go to the ground.

It's very much a sport and fitness oriented martial art. It's fantastic for what it is but don't expect it to be very useful in a "real" fight (Although the only intelligent solution in a real fight is to run anyway).
