Doesn't surprise me. I think most seen the writing on the wall regarding the AAA market. Very sad to see one part of the gaming industry go down this route. Mobile games, as well as consumers have played their part which lead to this type business model.
Personally, i mostly play Indie, mid-tier games now and rarely buy AAA games. And if i do it's because i've picked them up for under a tenner with all the DLC intact. Even looking at my Steam wish list, i've got 72 games on there and not one AAA title is on it. It's a sign of the times.
Good news is that i won't be upgrading my GPU very often.
