Ok... well you haven't given much info, but i'll try my best. it could be one, problem, or multiple problems:

> Go into msconfig (type into search bar on start) and check the startup items. disable all the ones you don't really need.

> Vista is generally very slow. my old machine running vista had the same sort of problems that you mentioned. i would suggest getting windows 7, or waiting for windows 8 (if you like the new layout).

> It could be your hard drive. If it is old, it will tend to slow down boot times, and maybe shut down times too. i am in the process of upgrading to an ssd because my 5 year old hdd is way too slow for my liking.

> If your hdd is more than half full, this can also slow systems down. try doing a disk cleanup (right click/properties/cleanup). also delete unused files.

> It could be a virus. update your antivirus, and do a virus scan. if you don't have an antivirus, i suggest malwarebytes as your best bet.

> Check task manager to see how may tasks are running, and to see which ones use the most memory.

> If worst comes to worst, you can always disable aero, although it won't do to much.

Hope this helps :)

What further info do you want?
It all started when I was on Facebook, I knew I stopped the update but all of a sudden the screen went to power saver, it stayed on it forever so I turned off the PC then as it rebooted the windows update proceeded then it restarted and the slow boot time kicked in, when I logged Mcafee told me that it had removed a Trojan but its been saying that a lot recently, I will download mallawerebytes and run a scan over the weekend
