Hi there

Am visiting https://www.gov.uk/keep-registration-number

I want to remove my private plate from the 911, do I just fill this in and pay the £80 and put my old plates back on?

A little worried that there is no mention about me putting my old plates back on the car, they just want to charge me £80 to retain my private plate for a year. If I go through and pay this £80 will my car just automatically revert back to its original plate and I should just put those plates back on the car straight away?

Someone may correct me but I believe they send you a new registration as the old one gets put back into circulation? My mum took her plates off her old car and they put some other random registration back on it and not the plates it came with.

So if I just go through the process with DVLA on the link in the OP everything will be automated, new plates will come in post etc?

If your original plate number is still available you will get it back or a generic one if it isn't.

You can put your old plates back on straight away if you get the same reg or you will have to get new plates made up if it isn't.

OK cool, so I am safe to just do this online right now and can still drive the car on the private plate until I get documentation in the post?

It's instant so you you will need to put the reg that is reassigned to the car back on, that's what it said on the email when I did it a couple of weeks ago.

You'll then get a retention certificate and a new V5 through the post.

When I bought my previous car privately, the boy went through the retention process for his private plate and the car reverted back to original registration. This was in 2011 though, so things may have changed in interim.

I carried on driving with the old plate for a week or so after transferring it.

Not everyone will have plates ready and you're supposed to need the v5 to produce the plates so you don't always have a choice.

I guess it'd show up as no mot/tax on the police apnr system so you might get problems but you'd be able to explain it.

Made the payment at which point it told me my new registration which happens to be the original one which came with car. So if I still have plates I can put straight back on or wait until the new V5 comes to get some made. :)

Don't forget to update your insurance details! Driving around with the "wrong" plate on could cause you some trouble...

Handy to know - Always wondered what happens at the point of 'switch'. I guess it's effectively registered with two plates until you get the new V5...?

At what point do you tell insurance though? When you swap the plates, or now because you've initiated the change?

Sometimes yes sometimes no :)

I bought a 2.0 Ghia Focus tax free while stationed in Germany with the RAF vehicle was collected from a Ford dealer in the UK while I was back on leave.

When I returned to Germany the vehicle had to be De-Registered in the UK as it had been exported and then re-registered under the British Forces Germany system.

2 years later when I was posted back to the UK had to do the whole thing again in reverse and when I re-registered the car I got back the same registration number that it had when I originally collected it so no need to buy new number plates :)

When I did the same thing for my GSXR750SRAD I got a totally different number when I re-registered it in the UK.
