This is indeed very true. What i'm hoping to exploit is the lack of consumer loyalty in this market.

The way I look at this, is if I get this websites feet of the ground in an orderly fashion, its value will increase naturally anyway....

If you're really buying a 3 letter dot com, chance are is that you can sell the domain alone without a developed site for a few grand in any case. If you did give it a go and it didn't make any money, worst case scenario is that you sell the domain for a couple of grand and cut your losses.
 
If you can afford it I'd do it. Just make sure the person owns the domain and everything, and it will be in your name at all levels.

What would you be hosting on? With that kind of traffic your going to be looking at 'proper' dedicated servers.

I hope so. 5k isn't the end of the world anyway, a part time job should make it up in a year or so.

Absolutely. I've already confirmed that i'm getting everything.

Hosting is going to be a bitch. I'm definitely going to need dedicated servers and the prices are :eek:.

I know it doesn't come cheap! Also be wary of companies that say dedicated hosting server, but in reality it's just a virtual server that I would have thought will not be much good to you.

Also check they allow adult websites :p

Indeed, lots of places are loathe to do so. I'll definitely be doing peformance checks on anything I get.

Probably going to be a free website. However if I start a forum, i'll be paying for posts ;)
 
A pal of mine has a porn site which he bought because it has a lot of traffic and a good name and he thought he would find ways to make some money from it. In practice he found that while there is a lot of traffic, it is such a competitive market and people are so used to getting something for nothing that his time was better spent with his (extremely succesfull) non-porn sites. He is still a porn baron though.

Hardest part will be finding someone who's T&Cs will allow adult material. Depending on your content SOME of it may well breach local laws. As well as this you may well need to take a YouTubeesque approach to potential copyright and legal breaches. As in - "Report abuse" system in which 'you' remove the offending material as soon as viable.

However, as far as pricing goes - shop around.

Some unlimited bandwidth dedicated hosting is available for more than agreeable rates. But, I suggest you get some smaller scale hosting while you test the waters. No point in dumping cash into something you will not need till X months down the line.

True enough, but with me being a student, its still a lot, for something that is quite hard to convert to cash. The world is an uncertain place.


Guess i'm going to have to think over this...
