Taking Card Payments

Seeing a lot of people recommending iZettle and other smartphone devices, OP specified they didn't want these and asked for a Wifi or Phone line based terminal recommendations...

I would recommend following up the offer of going with Worldpay (formerly Streamline) and getting a Static Desktop terminal on IP (broadband). I would expect you to pay £15-20 a month. Debit and credit quotes are now % only (not pence for debit) so haggle as low as possible. Depending on the business' ATV you should try aim for c.0.5% or less to keep txn charges to a minimum.

Also check contract lengths (18m with Worldpay I believe) and also any minimum monthly service charge, try negotiate no MMSC if txn volumes are not going to be very high.

Agreed something like this. Talk with your bank normally they have a preferred card merchant or provided merchant services themselves. I'm with HSBC both business and current account and received favorable rates.

I have been running a business for (OMG) over 30 years. I have been tempted on many occasions to move to accepting CC payments but have always found, actually, that cash/cheque fulfils almost all needs and the costs of accepting CC are frankly unacceptable.

However, I have found that as people are moving away from cheques this is trending towards being no longer the case. I still get plenty of cash (40% or so of turnover?)

But I find that I am moving towards BACS payment as an alternative to Cheque bypassing the CC option altogether.

Can you not do this via smart phone?

(The nature of my business means that I deal with small numbers of large transactions so use the PC myself, but I am sure that in this day and age smaller sums could be easily transferred and the transfer confirmed via smart phone at the POS as it were?)

As a customer I'd be vary of putting my card into some iPhone card attachment, just wouldn't know if they were copying my card details or not.

You could always get one of those mobile card readers that have a GPRS sim card in to use anywhere, like what bailiffs use.

this is what we have with our spire terminals. use them in taxis, never had a problem even up in some of the more remote parts of Scotland
