This might not be a hardware issue but as the title says sometimes (other times they are quick) it takes along time for games to load up, tab out and quit my system has a i7 930 oc'd, 6GB ram and 2x5870s so it should tab out no problem but it can take sometimes 30secs of black screen to return to desktop and other times its instant, also i can sometimes have 5 mins of black screen before the games loading and others its very quick (as i would expect of a system like mine).

I used to have the long load/tab issue trying to play modernish games on an old rig with only 1GB of RAM and the CPU maxed out. I assume it would cache all the game to virtual memory and this would take a while. It was consistently slow though.

If it's sometimes instant then I imagine some process is preventing the switch between applications and display modes.

Any particular game concerned or does it happen randomly and to different games to different extents. Does the HDD have lots of activity when switching ? Does the virtual memory page file increase when switching?

6GB is plenty for any current game and OS to not have to cache to file although it might be doing it anyway.

Have you got page file enabled or disabled, and if its enabled what size are you running it at?

Which HDD do you have the page file on?

open task manager > performance tab > resource monitor > memory

se how much is "hardware reserved"

btw how is your ingame performance? any stuttering? could be a sign of a failing hardrive windows will freeze if it cant access the page file

wasnt there a thing about ssd drives where they can sort of get clogged up and you have to leave them idle for a few hours to sort themselfs out? sure i read it somrewhere a few days ago

hmm well My ingame performance seems the same if its slow to tab out or not ie crysis wardhead runs at 50fps if its taking 2 mins to tab out or 2 seconds. I have virtual memory set to 6GB and 2MB of RAM hardware reserved.
