Ideally, you'll need a camera with the ability to take long exposures. (Or you'll end up doing what I did before I bought my DSLR which was to fire off my digital IXUS continually for about an hour, resulting in just a few lucky shots - see my website).
The best method is probably to use an SLR on a tripod
- low ISO setting/film
- focus to infinity (or hyperfocal distance if shooting with a landscape)
- use f/8 upwards
- open shutter and experiment with exposure length - from 10 seconds to a few minutes. A locking cable release would be helpful for this
It will be easier to do this (long exposures) in areas with low light pollution - you can then leave the shutter open longer and get more 'forks' without the shot looking like daylight and aquiring a lot of noise
I can't wait to try this again now that I have the right equipment. Just need a decent storm!
