Taking stuff that isnt yours

Yer you may complain at the state of the society but that's just the world we live in these days. I bet in 95% of the cases especially in big cities you will never find or get returned what you lost. When i lost my wallet that small 5% decided to hand it in and not keep it for themselves, sell the details onto someone and generally cause a massive problem for me, the only problem being that i lost a small amount of cash which taught me a lesson on how to keep my belongings safe and always check when leaving buses, taxis, tube etc making sure you have everything in your pockets.

If you view the general society as being in a sorry state of affairs these days then your right, but well thats just the way things have changed, people arn't as nice as they used to be, you cant even leave your doors unlocked during the day these days even if you live in the middle of nowhere like myself.

You'd be a fool to think things would ever change but we all have different views on morality, keeping a bit of cash in return for getting someones personal belongings back to them isn't really wrong in my book, at least they are getting it back and with only a bit of minor inconvenience whereas in most cases they would just never see it again. I understand that some of your are gonna moan and call me a thief but its not like i go out of my way to cause people grief and harm is it? You should watch that film Harry Brown, then you can really moan at the state of todays society, and if i was Harry Brown id be using a bigger gun and more bullets!

Finders fee lmao. Best thing I have read today next to Twilight fans' antics.

Why follow society just because the majority do it?

You're supposed to be a part of the solution and not part of the bandwagon!

A nice balance is what I like , if you take the last rolo.. its fun

if you take all the rolo's .... and in the packet .... from the shop ... not so fun

though i must admit i have had bad experience with returning things, i used to live in an area with a lot of older people , I want found a purse while playing out ( i was young.. realy) and there was over £50 in it , my friends thought this was jackpot but me being nice found a bus pass in the purse and promtly returned it , I was greated nicely but once i offered the purse i was told i was a "thieveing Ba***rd" ... and i was threatened with the police. The second time ive dont this , when in the trafford centre i noticed a young lady drop her wallet/purse/thing .. so i picked it up and trotted ( i dont run) after her saying "excuse me" .. she turns round i offer the wallet .. and she screams. . im now stood in the middle of a crowd with this ladies wallet and her screaming .. what a good thing for me, eventualy her friends just give me daggers and snatch the wallet.

despite all this i still return things, though in future i plan to just throw said wallet at the owner and run away.

Someones had their fishfingers!

Theres nothing that restores my faith in human kindness more than someone returning something I have lost/misplaced, knowing that they could have kept it. Doing the same myself gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. :)

Though I did recently lose my mobile at a gig. When I called it someone answered and hung up. Made my blood boil tbh grrr...

I have done the same with a wallet, returned the wallet with all cards minus the tenner that was in it. Same happened to me when i lost one in a taxi

so we really need a poll!

lets really see how many people would either

A. keep a wallet with cash and cards
B. keep small amount of cash and return wallet
C. hand in all items including cash

Just referring to lost wallets/purses here

In the UK, I'd hand pretty much anything I found into the police.

Over here Czech Police are so corrupt handing stuff in to them would deprive the original owner as much as me keeping it would, I'd probably try to contact the owner direct if there are any contact details in the property, if not I'd put a poster up where I found it.

A bit different in Czech republic as I know. In Prague a few years ago we got a taxi back from a club and asked the driver how much it would be. He said 20 euros and all was fine. Then when we got to our hotel he demanded 40, mates tried to get out without paying and he pulled a gun on one of them! He then kept him in the car until we went and got 40 euros.

Thats proper theft!

It annoys me that people even think the 'norm' is to steal the item.

The norm is to leave the item there, it's not your business and most people think either A) It might not be actually unattended or B) I don't want to look like I might be stealing it.

The problem with this is that the people who genuinely do want to steal it are the type to pick it up, which is why the opinion is skewed.

The fact of the matter is if you become the person that picks it up then you are potentially stopping someone else like the OP from nicking it.

People aren't dishonest thieves, some are, but unfortunately they cast a big shadow that we have to move out of.

When I've found things on the pavement or whatever I usually leave them on a wall for someone to come back for, I've never found anything major thoughsuch as a wallet or ring.

Where I work (A college) lots and lots gets handed in to be fair, some very expensive stuff indeed, blackberrys, H Samuel jewellery etc, even more staggering is the amount of stuff still left over at the end of the year unclaimed. I must have hundreds of pounds worth of pen drives in a big envelope up here in IT.

I lost my wallet in a Rock Club about 2 months ago. Ruined my evening. I had about £30-40 quid in there plus all my cards and some receipts and general stuff I needed to hang on too!

Tried ringing them to see if it was handed in (I was hopeful as it wasn't your typical Yates/Liquid/Etc crowd of people) but nothing turned up.

About 2 days later after canceling my cards I receive a phone call from the manager of club. They found my wallet in the toilets apparently.

Turns out no money was handed in with it (finders fee I guess) but I was happier to receive all my other cards back that I would have lost, most importantly drivers license and my Shake-a-way reward card (two stamps to a free shake!!).

A little annoyed at losing £30 but happier that I kept everything else.

When I was 18 or so I lost my wallet on a 6th form night out near Christmas. It had again about £40 in it and I only realised half way through the night and it ruined my enjoyment of festivities taking place. Got home and the next morning someone had posted it through the letterbox, with EVERYTHING intact. I was most grateful being a student bum at the time not to have lost the money!

To summarise, its annoying to lose your stuff and the best feeling is when you get it all back, with everything how it was. It seems acceptable by some to take finders fees but I wouldn't bother and hope that the person was so grateful they might give me a little something in return. Having lost my wallet numerous occasions I know how extremely frustrating/annoying/anger inducing it can be, so I empathise when I find other peoples stuff.

Yeah, if you use dodgy cabs that can happen I guess, the big taxi companies here are really good, also getting a price quoted in Euros and not Koruna would put me off straight away as I never carry Euros :p You should have called the taxi company again and complained and got them to speak to the driver, paid him the correct amount then call him a čurak as you run away :D

Does not compute :p

If i ever find a wallet purse, i really dont see the problem with keeping the cash (under £50, after all you shouldnt really carry around £££'s with you incase you loose or get mugged) and handing it, sort of like a finders fee.

Quite right, how dare these people carry around so much cash. They clearly have no recourse to complain if they loose (sic) it, it's practically their own fault.

If your that careless with your belonging to drop and loose them...
If I find somebodys wallet I'll hand it in as it's a complete inconveinience to have to be re-issued cards, drivers license etc, if It had any cash in it I'm not sure what I'd do.

If I found something else like a phone/camera I'll hand it in. I found a phone on the dancefloor of the SU a few weeks ago and handed it in. It's of no use to me, I have my own phone.

Theres a group on facebook by somebody who has found someones camera and has popped a few photo's up in the hope of finding the owner. The owners obviously been travelling so will probaly be over the moon if/when they discover that group!

If I find anything that might be worth something to somebody, I'll usually hand it in or track down the owner.

Though I did have quite an unrewarding experience when I found an expensive Blackberry coming back from town one night. Managed to get hold of the owner the next morning to arrange a pick up, to which their reply was "I'm a bit busy, can you drop it off to me?". Cheeky git.

They came to collect it eventually.
