It's not really the same kind of hack and slash. Think it's classified more as an Action JRPG since you have free movement (usually achieved by holding down one of the triggers which they started doing with Tales of the Abyss onwards) but you activate skills assigned to different button presses (or directions), and you also have a default attack button, the ability to jump, block, dodge, etc. It's a lot more tactical than the likes of DMC, but it's not turn based like Final Fantasy either as you have party members you can switch between, set them up for different strategies (i.e. attack enemies with full force until a party member drops below 45% HP at which point switch to healing) and there's obviously the gear customisation, crafting, skillsets, etc. so that also adds depth to it.
