Talk about being unlucky

I don't own this board so I can't say much but have you tried different bios? Different bioses can cause Core/Real Temp to report different temps.

well what can I say I must be so unlucky

I first had an Asus Striker II Extreme which I found to be unstable and after everal weeks I gave up on it and decided to go for the Asus Maximus Extreme.

Well I put it in and updated bios etc to the latest one and checked temps in coretep (0.97 and 0.99) and on my quad cpu (q6600) core 0 was at 44c and cores 1-3 was at 23c so core 0 was 20c hotter.

So I thought that my cpu was not sitting right or water block (cooling) or not enough paste etc.... so i stripped it all and checked pins etc all looked ok so re applied arctic silver and re-installed it and booted up xp and checked temps again? and still the same..

So against my own judgement i decided to lapp my cpu a little bt more in case for some stupid reason it became un even( bear in mind its been perfect on my previous 2 boards striker II extreme and Abit I35Pro).

so put it all back together again and guess what!!! still core 0 is 20c hotter but the other 3 cores have dropped 2c so obviously my lapping improved that but not the 20c margin with core 0.

So I came to the conclusion maybe my bracket for the water cooling block for the cpu was warped or something so I decided to put my old stock intel hsf on (without thermal paste this time as I could not be bothered now) and booted it up and check temps and obviously the cores were hotter around 30c but that was down to the cooler and no paste but core 0 was still in front with just under 47c so still that 18c hotter than the rest.

So its got to be the board surely??? as my cpu has always been within 2-3c of each core nothing this big.

Any suggestions apart from going over to asus and slapping them

Am I correct in assuming the board is defective if the cpu was ok in the striker II extreme and not in this board?

Because no doubt I have to prove this tomorrow when I go to the shop tomorrow in my lunch break

Now if they dont have another Maximus Extreme in stock I may have to go for the Rampage but it means no fusion block for my water cooling so I will just cool the cpu :(

I've used ASUS motherboard for years and never found to have a problem with them. When did you buy your first ASUS Striker II Extreme board because I think you will find this is still under warranty by ASUS, send it back to them and they will test this and will renew your defect board free of charge.

With respect to overclocking it's basiaclly down to experience and a sound knowledge of electronics, not that I'm stating you don't have either, I'm just stating you need to calculate the varience of the power load and ballance out the load to a level where you know it's going to be fine.

Rule number one when updating the BIOS update the old BIOS first before updating and then if the new BIOS update fails you have the old BIOS to go back to a normal working motherboard. Just a little hint.

Didn't the new board come with one?
I think they're standard for the socket (though, on past form you should REALLY not listen to me about S775 issues, particularly when the correct fitting of the protector is the issue).

Chap on a certain auction site sells them for 99p

dont worry about it, i've had my qx9650 running with a core hotter by 20c for six months now and havent had a single problem, its just a glitch imo.
