Talk me out of this nexus mindset

Can some one please reason me out of this mindset that I can only own a phone that keeps pace with google's android releases as and when. I.e the Nexus mindset.

I am looking for an upgrade to a Nexus 5 and the only handset that meets this criteria is the 5x. But there is more in the Android world such as the One Plus 3 etc... (Pixel is way to expensive)

But I cant do it. I will be looking on in envy as the nexus devices get their upgrades whilst I stay with Marshmallow or even a slow release of nougat (No 7.1 for example). :(

I know they have plans to bring Nougat to the One Plus, but when..........

Well the Nexus devices don't get that much support anyway. Our Nexus 5's will not be getting any more updates so even if you buy a Nexus device you will be out of date eventually.

Custom ROMs are always up to date though.
 
Can't help you I'm afraid!
I used to be like that but recently I just don't care if I'm a version behind - my Galaxy S6 is on MM and I have no desire for Nougat

If the stable build for the OP3 is released within a couple of months time then I'll be willing to give OP another go. Marshmallow took ages for the OP2.

Would've been nice if Google kept the Nexus brand as the more affordable range, I can't see that many people going after the Pixel due to price.

Except the 5x is now second division and won't be getting Android 7.1 quickly. Just sometime before the end of the year according to Google.

7.1 is initially going to be exclusive to the Pixel line when they hit the streets on 20th Oct.
 
I am interested in this. I have a Nexus 4 which I have repaired twice - it is hanging on - it has been a great phone for me - I wanted to see what the new google phones were offering.

But the Pixel costs from £599 which is stupid money to spend on a mini computer which I have trapped in the past in the car door, dropped on the floor, the loo etc. It is bonkers.

Personally, there is no way I would pay that for a phone or a laptop.

The Nexus 5x is £245. What is not to like.

I say let the early adopters early adopt; I have better things to do with £350 quid.

I went from N4 to 5x. It's a great phone and I have no plans to upgrade for a long time. I wish it wasn't a whole 13.1mm taller than the 4 but I can live with it.

What ROM are you running on your N4? I'm thinking of giving mine a new life streaming radio. It's got some version of Revolution Remix on there at the moment but I think I'll need to find something more up to date.
 
I have been a long time Nexus fan but currently rocking an S7 Edge... my last Nexus phone was an N5, since then I had a Sony Z3 and HTC One M8.

Its one thing to have the latest updates but on the Nexus you were basically a beta tester, so you'd get all the weird bugs first. By the time the other OEMs brought their version out, it was hopefully based on bug-free revision of the OS.

With that in mind, and the fact that, although I'm still not a fan of the likes of Touchwiz, I have to concede its pretty easy to make it look and feel like a Nexus (only with extra features) but the main advantage is the far superior hardware than a Nexus offering (only the Pixel looks to try and change this). Nexus phones have always been somewhat compromised even if they were very pleasant to use.

If so, this looks great I would be interested in that.

Primarily I call, text, email, read, Pokemon (level 20), sat nav, photograph, calculator, and play audiobooks with mine.

To stream music - I assume that is via wifi?

I like the Nexus because it is relatively easy to repair, I have replaced the battery, screen, back so far. It is relatively easy to work on unlike a bloody iphone offerings.

Because I am a tech rookie I do like to use the previous generation tech kit when the price is right and bumble about with it.

I am disappointed Google no longer makes a £399 offering which is my max. I am considering the 5x. I will do a bit of research and look around.
 
I've not noticed any massive differences between versions.
Some clever stuff but nothing that's made me desperate to upgrade.

Happy with op3 at the moment.

The Nexus 5x is £245, what else is worth looking at in the £250 to £400 bracket with a similar quality camera? ;)

HTC One M8 is similar price.

Not sure I can change your mindset but I moved away from a nexus device last year and am more than happy. I used to want the latest version but really don't care now, there just aren't enough changes to get that excited about. I was also worried about moving away from stock but again I'm perfectly happy with my Samsung, despite being told TouchWiz was the work of the devil.
 
I've gone an bought the 5x. ;)

It made sense. Affordable and going to keep pace with Android for at least another year.

The other handset I was looking at was the OnePlus 3 until I found out it was a 5.5" device.

IMO, the only serious downsides to the 5x is the speaker + vibration motor.

- Screen is rated as one of the best according to anandtech
- Battery isn't anything special, as with more or less every phone, you will have to to charge every day or 2 and the quick charge on the phone is very quick, iirc only the one plus 3 and maybe the gs7 (?) beats it for speed
- Design is ok (not exactly exciting)
- Build is decent enough, again no match for a metal build although the phone is very comfy and nice to hold, would have loved for the same build/look at the 6P though :(
- performance was patchy when first released but can't say I have had any serious issues since I got mine, feels fast and smooth to me even more so with with nougat
- camera is up there with the gs7 etc. video recording isn't anywhere as good but for photo quality it is great especially low light

The biggest problem at launch was the price, it was priced too highly and too close to the 6P, which was better in every way so it wasn't really worth saving the £90. At £250, I think that is a pretty good price.

Personally if I didn't care about the camera, updates/stock and I knew I could get on with the size, I would go with a one plus 3 but then again... if I could cope with the size then I would much much much rather spend a bit more again and get the 6P :p

Have had a n5, n7 2013 and now 5x and I have not had any serious bugs with new releases, if there are any niggles, they are usually sorted with a cache partition wipe. Every android phone has a few niggles/bugs regardless of what version it is running i.e. just look at the gs7 thread, quite a few complaints about battery drain there, something about media server.
 
The other reason why I've gone and bought the 5x is because this could be the last time you can get an affordable handset straight from Google. (Direct Android updates)

Moving forward once this dries up in order to get your timely updates your gonna need to shell out premium cash. Which is sad. And is something Google need to fix.
