What a nightmare i am having.

My screen is now scolling like a mexican wave as i cannot get a driver to work.
I downloaded the latest 7.xx driver and catalyst control from ATI's website, tried to install and restarted. Monitor went into power save mode. Rebooted into safe mode and removed driver and tried to download again, still no joy.

Now i have removed the driver, whats the best way to sort this, i'd love to use the search but looking thru pages of topics is killing my eyes as the refresh rate is so poor.

Could someone tell me here how i should go about getting a driver installed correctly to work on this card.

Connect3d x1950xt 256mb

Many thanks

what card did you have in previously? Did you clean out the old drivers properly (definately required if it was Nvidia based).
Is your card fully connected up? As in power cable on the card.
I'm sure there's more to check but that'll get you started.
If all those are correct then I don't see you should have any problem using the supplied drivers or the latest you've downloaded.

This is a fresh install with all new parts.

Card is in correctly and wired up. 6 pin power connector an' all.

It just doesn't seem to like the driver, ive tried looking thru on here and it seems to be very common.

I am now trying just the driver on its own to see if that works

Just tried again. Downloaded catalyst 7.1 after deleting the previous download.

Installed it and rebooted, then computer came back on and the monitor went back to power save mode.

How the hell do you get the driver to work, this is really hacking me off. All this gear and cannot get a sniff of a game

Usually when things go wrong i like to break them, but given the cost of this little lot i'll try to persevere

what are the specs of the rest of your system. is the psu deffinatly up to the task ? Monitor running on vga or dvi ?

i'll be doing this soon, sorry for the thread hijack (although it might help) but what's a good driver cleaner (i assume there's one called Driver Cleaner)

Matty, ive just bought a new 500w proper pci-e psu. 4000+amd 64, winfast(foxconn) mobo, 1 gig memory.
xp sp2

My monitor is a crt 17'' so i assume its VGA, i have plugged in the convertor so it fits the gfx card socket.
Is there something else i need to do to make it dvi or anything.

Just tried again, this time i uninstalled thru the device manager them updated driver but it loaded as far as the black windows XP screen then the moniter went into sleep mode again

Could it be a refresh rate issue? or maybe displaying a screen res that the monitor doesnt like?

Is it possible to try it at a friends monitor (a TFT one would be best).

i can't even get into it to set any refresh rates, its a Sony trinitron E250 monitor 17''.

My cousin had a tft but its about 24inch and a bit on the big side to get here.

Is there any way of finding the older 6.12 driver? would that make any difference

try the driver on the cd or reinstalling windows

also do you have any probs with the gfx card picture wise while loading windows ?

OK UPDATE.

I think it could be a resolution problem.
Tried swapping the monitor cable to the other gfx card output and the monitor flicked on for about 2 seconds and the res looked like something crazy, writing and icons were very small. I can also remember a long time ago with old gfx cards trying to up the res and it putting the monitor into sleep mode but it allowed a few seconds to adjust.

This time i have literally 1-2 sec's before it blacks out again into sleep mode.

Anyone know how to fix the res prior to the computer blacking out or while in safe mode so it will boot properly

If it is a resolution problem, TRY THIS.

(WARNING).

RIGHT click on your desktop, DO NOT move the mouse when windows starts.

Press the UP arrow key on the keyboard, press ENTER.

HOLD shift and press tab. This will get you on the category tab of the display properties. Press the right arrow key FOUR times. This will get you to "settings" Press tab 3 times. Press the left arrow key around 5 - 6 times. Press the TAB key 7 times. This will get you to "apply" then press SPACE to accept that.

No idea if that will work. I tried it using Nvidia drivers, so assuming your driver display is the same, that should get you to 800x600 settings.

make sure you're doing a clean install of the drivers...

I've always had troubles with updating ati drivers - I've found doing it this way to be the best:

download "driver cleaner pro" from Softpedia, install it
restart into safe mode
run driver cleaner pro (tick the tickbox, the add all of the ati things in the drop-down, the click clean. wait until it says "finished cleaning")
restart into normal mode (not safe mode) and install the drivers

... should work that way.

Also, try another monitor. Could just be a borked card :(

Good idea to reset the res with the keyboard.

Can anyone trial it with ati as ive just tried it with the above but ive managed to clear my internet history and changed some other settings.

Many thanks

tried pc today linked to my tv thru the black cable that came with the gfx card. got it set up on the tv, set both the identities to 800x600 and 60hertz.
worked fine on tv then tried again on monitor and it displayed the windows background (grass hill one) but not any icons.

It is now working fine on my cousins monitor, as this is where i am typing from now.

Any ideas?
It works ok on my monitor as long as i dont install the ati driver but when i do that it just will not play ball.

Well after all this fiasco. I have finally worked it down to either being a monitor problem or just my usual spell of bad luck.

Bad luck it was, i am now happily sitting ar home on my usual monitor slugging a cold bottle of stella typing this.
It ended up being a faulty digital to analogue convertor  , the one that plugs into the rear of the gfx card. For some strange reason i decided to swap it for the other one that comes with the card and it worked.

Big thanks to all the suggestions you guys came up with on here. :) ;)
