Talk sense to me... keep 670 SLI?

Ok, not sure if it's just my brain trying to find something to fixate on, but there's this idea growing in my head that the 2GB/256-bit on these cards will shortly start slowing things down...

Game at either 2560x1440, or 1080p (and sometimes in 3D on the 1080p screen)

Am I struggling with anything in particular? Not really. But I can't max out BF4 at 2560x1440 - whether that is down to the game itself not running great or the cards maybe struggling a bit, I am not sure.

So, I'm not really thinking "right now", but rather "not too distant future". Consoles have a fair chunk of memory available to them now, and I am sure that will start having an effect on games coming out - though I could be very wrong.

But I don't want to throw a lot of money at anything. I cancelled PS4 to save money, and not sure how much I could sell these for to put towards a new card.

I keep thinking for long term (3 or so years), even the 3GB on the 780's won't be all that good.

Then there is the 4GB 290's, which look like a more viable long-term solution - getting one now, another for crossfire when cheap. Though I am put off by accounts of noise.

Am I worrying needlessly? I do like my cards, and honestly, have had so few issues with them in SLI. But will they realistically perform WELL for another 2/3 years?

Or is now a good time to sell up?

At 1440p, the 670s will definitely be struggling at higher settings. I wouldn't expect them to perform well compared to 3GB/384bit cards for the next 2-3 years, but they're not going to become useless either.

You'd get around £130-£150 on a good day here for a 670, which would almost cover the cost of a aftermarket 290 when they are released.

If you don't mind reducing the settings in BF4 for a bit, or stick to 1920, then hold out until the cooler 290's appear, see how they perform & grab one and xfire later.

Plus if you wait you'll also find out what difference Mantle makes to BF4 performance, assuming that it is patched in during December.

Wait for Maxwell would be my advice. Same boat as you virtually (but currently gaming on 2560 x 1080 super wide which is less taxing), but I see zero point in changing from 670 SLI at the moment.

Unless you have the spare cash and just fancy messing about in the meantime, which is basically the curse of most of us on here aint it.

If you can hold out till the next 20nm cards it would probably be the most sensible choice if you're looking for a solution for the next 2-3 years. The bonus is that they should be cooler yet offer better performance but the wait could go long into next year.

So far consensus seems to be keep. Which, honestly, I know I should...

Get your moneys worth out of them

...exactly for this reason.

Have had them a year+. Probably lost 50% of value in that time already, if not more.

If they'll serve me well for another 2 years, don't think it will bother me, but if they really start struggling in 6 months, will be disappointed.

To justify upgrading, I tend to look at games and see if they are struggling and if they are not, I look to bench results and compare and then what ever else I need but in truth, when I am stuck into a game, I don't run fraps/MSI AB and just enjoy it. What you have is plenty and hold off that upgrade bud :)

2 gig is a bit small now and 3 would be the minimum that you would really want to aim for but games for now wont really move above 3 gig. Simply Why would you cut out the majority of the market?

Hi, l have Sli 670 4gb > 2560X1440 and have no problems maxing out settings, but gaming at 2560x1440 some games you don't have to use Max Settings.

Use Nvidia Geforce Experience to optimize your game if it supports this, if your still struggling to run the game turn the settings down. In Ghost some of my settings are turned off or set to low and the game still looks very good.

Keep your Sli 670 for a while yet.

There's no way 670 SLI can max out many existing games at 1440p, unless you are ok with <60fps averages. It'll also mean lower AA settings compared to other cards. That said, the only upgrade worthwhile currently would be 2x290s or 2x780s (or higher), and it would be very expensive for the gains.

What are you min fps figures in BF4?

Have you tried 2xmsaa instead of 4x, apparently it gives a boost of 8-10fps which may move you very close to the 60fps gold standard.

I wouldn't think that overclocked 670's in sli would need upgrading for BF4, particularly if overclocked.

There are 2 chaps who post on this forum regularly, setter22 and jono8 I believe who seem to do very well with the 670's.

Wait until Mantle is released because there may be extra efficiency found if some of the bulky direct x driver is by passed which may give you extra frames.

Yeah, they run around 1200 on the core. Can't remember how much have upped the memory, but I think it may be in region of +500 from stock reference (I could be lying though)

I do run at 2xAA. Though sometimes I think AA has no effect on BF4....

I also use SSAO over HBAO, and drop post processing from ultra to high, and that seems to keep the FPS from dropping too much below 60.

Like I said, not really struggling right now - it's more of a "how soon" thing.

2GB doesnt allow for smooth max settings in BF4 @ 2560x1440

I sold my 670 SLI setup and bought the 780. Now BF4 is silky smooth at that res :)

Right,
I would say if your happy generally with the performance just wait for either Nvidia or AMD to bring out the 20nm node gpu's.

My computer upgrades usually mirror how demanding it is to run battlefield in the settings and res that I use. So for example if it takes 2 years for BF5 or BF2144 to be released and my cards or system cant reach 60fps then i'll upgrade then. At the moment thank goodness I'm much higher so, hopefully in approx 2 years for me too..
