My other half is on Talk Talk broadband and I have tried to use bitorrent on it but its just not having it. Peer/seeds connect but nothing comes down. Are they throttling the ports or something so you cant use it?

Another thing if you dont use it for a while it disconnects from the internet, and this is using my old Netgear DG834G router that I never had any trouble with wireless or wired using my BT account so I know the hardware is fine.

Is this a case of you get what you pay for (in talk talks case free internet, but it sux) ?

Can someone clear this up, as its really got me scratching my head and im starting to run out of options now. Fortunately I dont think she is in contract with Talk Talk so she could go with another ISP. I know her mobile is with Vodafone and they offer a free broadband service. Is it any better than Talk Talk?

I hate to say this, but.....

When we first signed up i hated them, it took 7 weeks and a lot of fighting with them to get us connected. BUT.....now we are on i cant complain, obviously it drops out and dies every now and again, but my torrents max out usually and my downloads usually will almost hit max on a 2mb line. I hate to say it, but crap customer service aside, their line seems a lot less restricted and reliable than when we were on PlusNet.

Mine never disconnect itself, or if it does my routers fast to reconnect again.

Try putting encoding on it (theres a choice for it in options somewhere on all the main torrent clients) it will make it harder for them to identify torrent traffic and therefor harder to block.

If you read Talk Talk fair usage policy it does say they will limit peer to peer use during peak times. Very sneaky this fair usage addon if you ask me.

Quote below is from their website:

Our fair use policy is designed to ensure your service is fast and reliable 24 hours a day. A very small number of customers use file-sharing software (commonly known as "peer to peer" or P2P) or other applications, which constantly send and receive video and other very large files.

This type of activity uses a huge amount of bandwidth and can significantly reduce the speed at which our other customers can access the Internet, especially at peak times

Our fair use policy restricts this high bandwidth activity in peak hours to allow the majority of customers to use their broadband connection for normal residential usage (I.e: surfing, e-mail, online gaming etc). This allows us to give you a high quality service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
