Reading ANY forum, you read repeated criticism of all ISPs. It seems that any time some poster mentions Talk-Talk, a firestorm begins - why is this? By all accounts for 'phone + broadband, Talk-Talk offer a much better deal than either BT or BT + another.

Does anyone have any real-world, 1st hand experience of Talk-Talk, good or bad and what is / was it?

Comments along the lines of Talk-Talk are useless / rubbish / etc., etc., etc really aren't of any interest. Nor am I interested in 'Gaming' and therefore ping times or downloading vast amounts of anything . . . other than the occasional Linux distro. I am just talking about fast remote (VPN) access to the office, email, website browsing, etc.

Most of the bad responses are from people who don't know how to get things sorted.

Their support forum is the best form of communication with them, most people don't actually know/use this. They also offer a fastpath profile for gamers and sort out issues on the forum quickly.

The people who are quite critical haven't used the forum thus are quick to have a go at CS.

ive been with talk talk for over a year now and they have been superb for me.

no loss of speed.

internet has always been on for over a year now.

glad i moved to talk talk now as it's very cheap and the service has been great.

What about PlusNet?

Thanks for the reference to the Talk-Talk Members Forum :)

I certainly get the impression that their Help Desk which is reported as being based in India is the cause of many complaints. In my experience, most ISP Help desks are (perhaps understandably) pretty much useless unless your query is VERY basic and where possible, I avoid using them.

Talk-Talk do appear to get a very poor rating (user feedback) in the Broadband-Help reviews although that may just be down to successful advertising and thus a much greater %age of inexperienced users needing help?

I get the impression tha PlusNet who also offer Home 'phone and Broadband packages are held in pretty high regard - any idea whether they are part of some other (larger) group?

I'm a migrated ex-tiscali customer, the service i cant really complain about as I've never had any lasting problems.
However they have recently increased there prices and reduced the service they provide. For this alone i'm looking to get away from them if they think this practise is ok!

Only time I had problems was when we went to their 2mb to 8mb service, when it was Tiscali. Line was constantly dropping, but I posted on the service forum and some one sorted it out for me.

Shame their speed sucks so much. They seem to have capped usenet to ~400 kbps even though they say they don't.

Hopefully going to be going to O2 LLU next month. And as LaziardKing says they did recently increase their prices so probably would be cheaper getting it from some were else.

Friends of mine who have talktalk say its good.
Like most Isp's its the call centers that let them down Virgin Media also have a forum where our problems will be sorted much much quicker than over the phone.

Interesting . . . By how much have they increased their prices and in what way have they reduced their service?

They still seem to have competitive pricing if you want both a land-line service and broadband.

As others have said talktalk are fine (better than anyone else you can get a my exchange) but their Indian based call centre is pants. Lucky for us their forums are great thou only 9-5 mon-fri and you of course can't use them if your internet is down.

The thing I dislike most about talktalk is they have been calling me once a week for a month trying to sell me a mobile phone contract. At least the folk in India take the message that I don't want it and the call doesn't last long.

Increase of over 25% and reduced the usage limit from 100gb to 40gb.
I think they have also increased there call charges but I've never used the phone to notice.
I can appreciate that i was already on a really good deal from Tiscali, but this was just an insult.

To what ISP are you thinking of going?

If you know of one that offers a better deal than Talk-Talk for a land-line service and broadband I would very much like to know of it :)

Incidentally, I really can't see any way that I would EVER download as much as 40GB in a month, let alone 100GB and whilst I can understand your annoyance at the 25% price increase and losing a 60GB download tranche, if you can't find a better price and you don't use the 60GB, you would rather be cutting off your nose to spite your face, wouldn't you?

Looking at moving back to plus net or sky, there pretty much similar is price and yes it would be a case of cutting my nose off to spite my face :p but I'm not going to willingly accept paying more for less, even if i end up paying the same somewhere else!
Unfortunately i would hit the 40gb limit to, not often but there will be times.

Going to have to use Talk Talk as they are the only people to offer decent speeds (LLU) on the Exchange, going to miss my Virgin 50Mbps, moving into my yummy girlfriends house more than makes up for it ;)

When did talktalk ever have a 100GB limit? As long as I've been with them they have had 40 and 80 (80 was technically unlimited when I joined). They then for a time had everyone unlimited while their usage meter wasn't implemented. They packages are now 40GB, 80GB, and unlimited.

Talk Talk may have never but Tiscali did, then talk talk took over and changed the service.

I'm with talktalk, currently syncing at 22meg.

Used to be with Virgin 20 meg and I'm paying about £15 less now then I did for a slower speed.

I never had a problem with them until something went wrong and had a horrid time getting it fixed despite telling them what was wrong. I changed over to O2 and now pay £7.50 for an 8mb line. Which was previously at 3.5mb at best before and always being told it could go no higher.

If you are only using the internet for light surfing then go with which ever is cheapest and suited to your situation.

The only thing that would stop me moving to talk talk is the long 18 month contract. I hate long contracts!
That is a very fair point - although wouldn't a similar sort of condition apply if you were transferring to BT?

I believe that any time you change almost anything on a BT contract it automatically extends you contract term to 12 months - not sure if that is correct.

Still - 18 months does seem like a very long time if problems crop up and Talk-Talk fail to correct them :(
