Talk-Talk - sensible responses only please . . .

I've been using Talk Talk "unofficially" for ages.
I was using Nildram.
I've now moved to Opal (Talk Talk's corporate ISP) on an Upto 24mb connection.
I connect at 18mb, I get 1mb upload and a static IP address.

I've found the service quick and reliable.
I certainly don't have an issue in recommending them.
Talk Talk are my only option for LLU, so compared to an ADSL Max connection it was a no-brainer.

On TalkTalk LLU. Apart from a disconnection problem which i swore blind was their problem (turned out to be my router), i've had very little in the way of problems with them (twice i think, about 4 hours each) in the 4+ years i've been with them.

About 1.5miles from the exchange getting 5.8Mb sync, 4.7Mb throughput.

On another Talk-Talk thread, I have seen the following:
... I have many friends that are on Talk Talk and it seems that 90% of my friends under Talk Talk all have this same issue but it only seems to appear when they have been gaming either on PC or a console, and there are known rumours around that Talk Talk is a very good ISP for people that DO NOT GAME!!!, this ISP is for people that just surf the internet and read emails, general stuff, the ISP is not good for any kind of gaming in mind.

I may be wrong but on past experience with them and friends that are on Talk Talk it seems to be the gaming issue that creates the problem with Talk Talk.
As it happens, I am not interested in online gaming or even downloading large files (except for the occasional new Linux distro) but I do want fast speeds and I would like to feel confident that Talk-Talk are not going randomly to throttle my connection.

Any comments

Having worked at CPW from the start of TalkTalk, yes the actual landline proposition right through to the nightmare of the free broadband.

I can honestly say, that it started off very badly, customer service was a joke (it took us about 2 hours to get through to our own head office to talk about issues from store at the peak of the problems, and this went on for weeks), as was the service they provided (I used to have the 2Mb option) and it was pretty poor. Now however I think (from what I hear from friends who still work at CPW) things have got a lot better and the investements and buyouts they have done have improved things ten fold.

As far as VPN acces goes, I would check this with a tech moneky, as previous storied I have heard are people having a nightmare getting a VPN working over a TT connection (this is due to the port blocking system thatg they use to block P2P traffic).

If you want to use talktalk use Opal Communications, thier business grade services are epic we easily push 1tb~ of traffic from/to our office, no complaints in the past year anyway!

We only pay £27/month too ( including line rental )

Well I had a nightmare with them which was a shame as their deal for international phone calls at the time was great. With my wife being French this was/is crucial for us.

I'll try and keep it short but they somehow managed to have my address tied down to two phone numbers and two contracts. We had changed our number because we were getting loads of sales calls. I informed TT of this and they said no problem switch over will be in a couple of days, we'll then "switch off" your old number. Everything seemed to go smoothly and I was happy.

Anyway, 1 year later and I get a letter from a debt collectors company drop through the door saying we owe about £150 to talk talk. Well we'd had no letters from TT demanding money at any time and we had been paying our bills by direct debit without ever missing a payment. You can guess where the problem was can't you!?

Somehow they were still trying to charge me for the old line. Their customer support team were utterly useless, half the time they were based in India and couldn't even understand what I was saying. Even when I eventually got through to a English based call center it made no difference. They just didn't seem to understand what was wrong.

This took months to sort out, all the while with the debt collectors hounding us, despite me asking on numerous occasions for them to contact the debt collectors for me and explain the situation, or at the very least send me a letter that I could forward on to them. Honestly, I was furious with them, I'm usually very placid, but I lost my temper with the poor guys on the other end of the phone so many times just out of pure frustration.

Needless to say, I left and will never go back. Whenever someone tries to sell me talk talk, I go a little bit mental inside :p

Been with them for a few months now.

Positive points:

Connection seems fairly stable and getting around 2.5mbps sync on a non-LLU line here which is pretty good.

Negative points:

They completely screwed up our order, and sold us the wrong thing totally. We were sold the Plus package (Wireless N router, LLU Broadband, Anytime calls etc) but they screwed up. We couldn't get LLU here at the time so they helpfully moved us to the Essentials package (without telling/asking us!) where we had to pay for the phone calls, pay £15 p/m for the broadband, were sent the Wireless G router, and all of this for only £8 p/m more than the original price we were quoted! so helpful! We even told them when we put the order in we couldn't get LLU in our area.

Very long setup time - it took 2 weeks from our initial order for the phone line to be installed, and they quoted a further 21 days after that for the broadband to go live. 21 days after our phone line was installed I called them because our line still wasn't active, and they couldn't tell me when it would go live. I think it took 14 days or so on top of the 21 days we were quoted.

We asked to be Ex-Directory, our welcome booklet said we were directory listed.

Up until late last month we were still being charged for phone calls. They said we wouldn't be anymore, I don't think I believe them but we'll see on next months bill.

Basically they messed a lot of stuff up, we must have had £100 or so worth of credits from them due to the problems we've had and the empty promises to resolve them. I asked the agent I spoke to today to replay the notes from our last call and what they did/said was absolutely not what they told me they were doing.

The guy today started going on about how Talk Talk are the biggest/best value for money etc, so I told him they might be but they're also the most hassle, that shut him up pretty quickly.

Thankfully we are now eligible for the LLU service which means we can be put onto the right package, they've scheduled in the upgrade for the 13th of September.

I'd have switched providers ages ago but there is bugger all here really, no Cable/VM and no other operator is provisioning LLU here yet.

FWIW im on talk talk and im capped to 55KB/s all this month so far, they tell me im not buy all my torrent, http ftp etc downloads max out at 55KB/s, yet on speedtest it tells me my download speed is 220KB/s. I sync at 4mbit and normally max out at 320KB/s

make of that what you like.

Loads of frequent disconnects too at their end, throughout the years ive been with them since aol 56k.

Im guessing they have capped me all september for going over their pathetic limit in august.

I was swinging towards getting there LLU package, they hassled me that much over the phone that to be honest I wanted to tell them where to go.

The general consensus however seems to be that the LLU packages are not that bad!

Been with Talk Talk from when they took over Tiscali and my speed is up and down each and every day where with Tiscali i never had any problems and always got a constant speed

I miss Tiscali please come back soon

i tried to go with talk-talk this time last year (was with BT before)
they set it up so the phone was working and told me BB would be activated with 3 weeks :/
couple of weeks later they gave me an activation date.. this came and went with no BB being activated, after numerous phone calls to them over the next 5-6 weeks i finally got the answer from them that they couldnt install the BB to my line (BS tbh)

i then told them to cancell everything and went back to BT.. but then BT couldnt re-gain access to my line from talk-talk so i had to pay £150 for a new line :(

tbh im a bit worried atm as someone posted earlyer they recieved letters from debt collectors 1 year after cancelling their line.. im @ 1 year from cancelling so would i get debt collectors onto me too? :(

At common law quite apart from anything else they should be paying you -£150 notes
Write to Charleee and explain that your a law student and am interested in a test case with fellow members of your Dept as it raises interesting aspects of consumer law
