Hi all, since I now go away a lot (6 months a year away from home) I've been thinking about getting myself a handheld console to pass some time!

The last one I had was a gameboy advance YEARRRRRRS ago that I used when on holidays etc.

I'm pretty much out of the loop and know nothing other than it's a PSP or a 3DS to go for.

I like all types of games, although I do have a PS3.

I've also heard that there will be a new PS Vita coming out soon, is it worth waiting for this?!?

Is there a release date for the psp2 ?

Go for a cheap DSi, the DS library is fantastic and the battery life is also excellent.

That said the 3DS will play all of the DS games and the library of games for the 3DS is starting to get better.

Why don't you want it?

No idea on the release date of the PS Vita.

To me the nintendo just looks....childish?

I'm only looking to get rid of it as there are no games coming out now or soon that I want. I was really interested in the remake of MGS3 but they're also doing a HD remake of it on consoles so now I'm not so interested. I rarely travel either so if I'm sat at home with a 360, PS3 and PC I don't really give my handhelds any attention. :)

I'm in the same boat, though I need money for a car so different issue :D.

The content isn't their for me yet, I'm going to sell it after my Holiday and get a DS lite for as cheap as I can and just get old games, once I have a good choice the 3DS will be bought back.

Though I'll most likely not sell it as it's a cracking console, it's the difference between needing and wanting to sell it.

The Vita will deffo be out before the start of April in the UK as they have said it'll be out in all regions by the end of the fiscal year. Lots of rumors are putting it in time for xmas though.

Check out the most recent Vita thread for more details, videos and screens.

if you're travelling a lot it's prob worth getting the 3DS just now, then possibly trading it in, or just buying a vita aswell as the 3DS when it's released, each have (will have) good enough exclusives for me to make them worthwhile

I'm in the same boat, thought wise, although I'd just end up playing my pc/ps3/xbox so can't justify the purchase, but if I could get the use of it I'd prob have the 3Ds just now, then vita next year

I would wait for the Vita, I;ve played most games on the 3DS and it's ok at best, but ppl said that about the DS and look how that turned out over the PSP

I want a 3DS sooo bad it hurts! Mostly because I bought a PSP last time round and spent more time playing other peoples NDS.

Also the fact you can do naughty things to them for pretty damn cheap!

Because I (and you!) own a PS3, I'd go for the 3DS. I'm sorry, but uncharted/LBP vita will not be as awesome as playing it on a big screen.

Vita is seemingly trying to emulate the PS3/console experience, on a handheld, with a few twists. Whereas 3DS games (at least the ones coming up) are trying their own sort of angle, kinda different from console versions and more suited to a portable - see for instance, super mario 3DS, I believe eurogamer commented on how the levels are shorter than newer Mario games on console, and more remniscient of the length of the retro games.

Battery life on 3DS is shab-tastic, but I don't reckon Vita will be much better with that horsepower; if I'm going to be stuck next to a power outlet I'd rather be playing games where they play differently to the console versions, otherwise, I may as well have not bought the handheld and got myself a 580 with it.

Sony in their typically stubborn way are judging the market wrong again. It's pretty painful to watch it all unfold tbh.

People (obviously a few sony fanatics on here excluded) don't want a home console in their hand. They want a gaming experience tailored for portability, which the DS series delivers in spades.

Well I want a mobile console experience, and fun mini games that take advantage of the touch capabilities of the system, hopefully the vita can offer both, end of the day I think it would be even more silly for Sony to compete head to head with iTouch/iPhone and DS by only concentrating on smaller pick up & play titles, they won't win over that market, they are offering something which nobody else is, a current gen console experience in your hands, it may not be everyone's cup of tea but I do beleive there is a market for it, especially now that it can be done properly with dual stick controls, the single nub on the PSP was a big handicap on that system.

You're absolutely right. I mean, the Vita only has access to PlayStation Portable downloadable titles, PlayStation minis, PlayStation Suite games, PSOne Classics, videos, and comics. Of course none of those will be suitable for the portable experience. Nor will Vita games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Modnation Racers, Hustle Kings, Let's Golf or Wipeout, to name a few.

Good to see that your nintendo fanaticism isn't getting in the way of balanced opinion

For me, portable gaming + being able to play something like COD online while the wife watches Britain's Next Top X-Factor Model's Got Talent = win.

What sort of games do you want to play?

I've had a DS twice and both times I've ended up selling it after a few months.

I got a PSP 3000 6 months ago and still use it almost every day. For RPGs it's amazing.

The Vita looks great but it'll be expensive and will take a year or two to get a good library at a reasonable price. You can get a PSP now and there's a lot of cheap games.
