Hi guys, so my wife and I are looking to carpet 4 bedrooms in our new house. Neither of us have ever bought one before so know pretty much sod all! :D

After having a look around in places like carpet right etc prices seem to vary so much. We're not really sure what we should be looking for. We spoke to a lady to get a quote and she seemed a bit surprised we we looking at a carpet for £18.99/SqM for a bedroom? Is that too much?

I was thinking about getting some Cloud 9 underlay and grippers myself and fitting them and just getting whoever I get the carpet with to fit it. Sound like a plan?

Any advice welcome, but a few specific questions:

1. How are places like Carpet Right Vs Indys?

2. Heard good stuff about cloud 9 underlay but it seems there are few different types, is the Cirrus 9mm okay for bedrooms/home offices?

3. Wool vs polypropelene carpets, both seem okay to the touch but what are the real world differences.

Thanks in advance, :)

To be honest, you might be okay without underlay if you want to save cost but you can add it if you want but new homes are pretty eco friendly ;) I'd go with Indys we got a new 3 bed done the whole house but bathrooms/kitchen for £900 incl. fitting. although ofc you can go for more expensive carpet ;) tbh indys are cheaper from what we saw.

I bought all mine online and went for associated weavers harvest heathers. Managed to pick it up for £9.99 per sq m and went for tredaire dream walk underlay too. There is no shortage of carpet fitters locally.

The carpet was around £18.99 on the high street and they make a huge profit on the underlay. The bigger names like carpet right are to be avoided at all costs.

A friend owns/works in carpets as an indy - so perhaps I'm a bit biased given the BBQ chit chat about the industry..

Currently doing our house up and have got our 'cheapo' carpets from here. We went with this carpet as it is hard wearing and looks neat in the rooms we have done. We are using that carpet for the whole house apart from our bedroom and the nursery where we will have a better carpet.

They delivered on time on the two occasions we have ordered and not one thing went wrong, no issues with packaging etc I would recommend this company 100%. I did have to ring them up to place my second order as the website was playing silly buggers. That went well and the bloke was nice and friendly.

I got everything from there, grippers, door strips and underlay. We have done one big room 18ft x 10, hallway, stairs and landing and front room 11ft x 12ft all for (inc fitting from local bloke) all for £480 so far. Still got a few rooms to do.

I wouldn't spend much more n bedroom carpets. Better to get cheaper ones and replace them earlier. That way you get to have a change.

I put in cloud 9 and is great. Gives the carpets a plush feel.

Where did you get it from? I am after another in that range and cant find it as cheap as that.

buy wool or very high % wool all the synthetic carpets I've ever known people have fitted have lasted very poorly. I also wouldn't buy super cheap I'd rather have something that's going to last 10-20 years to avoid the hassle of moving furniture etc so you can replace the cheap mistake.

Keeping an eye on this thread too! Is carpet really that difficult to fit yourself as well?

To fit it nice and tight with a good finish while not hugely difficult does to some practice, if you have tons to do then it might be worth doing if not it's so cheap it's hardly worth the bother and a pro will get you a decent finish every time. Gripper and underlay is money for old rope though so consider doing that yourself.

Thanks in advance, :)

Having used a few different Cloud 9 products I would suggest fitting the underlay yourself (its a simple job), and invest in the Cloud 9 cumulus(11mm).. In bedrooms especially it does a wonderful job of feeling freat underfoot, insulating from sound (footfalls not carrying through to downstairs and downstairs noise not coming up), and thermal insulation.
The 9mm is good, but its generally not much extra £ for the 11mm. I used TradePriced when I did mine but that was a few years back now.. Delivered very quickly and they were good to deal with.

I was told by the fitter I used that a good underlay makes an OK carpet feel better and last longer, but a cheap underlay can make a good carpet feel cheap and not last very well. He approved of the choice of cloud 9 cumulus, and said its what he recommends.

Dont let carpet right etc supply their own underlay, you pay more and get an inferior product.. Its where a good chunk of their profit comes from. Sort your own fitter (find a local, call them before you go to buy carpet as they should be able to collect etc) as again its a big profit item for them doing no work other than acting as a 'finder'.
