Been into the bank to talk Mortgages so now starting to think about where to live. We currently live in Hedge End, which is nice, but is very much like living on a large housing estate (because it is). There isn't really any local shops or pubs or anything. Its the kind of place where going anywhere means using the car, if you get what I mean.

We have looked at Eastleigh when looking for somewhere to rent and didn't really like it, likewise for Southampton City itself.

I work in Winchester, and my GF works in Southampton Hospital. Ideally we would like to live somewhere within walking distance of a station and easy access to the M27 for my GF to drive to work, and Fareham looks good. However, I've never been to Fareham, and know nothing about it.

Whats it like to live there? Whats the good areas? Whats the areas to avoid? Compared to Hedge End its a lot cheaper.

Also, if you have any suggestions for elsewhere then let me know. I would love to live in Winchester, but its very expensive!

Cheers

Driving from fareham to j5 on the M27 is madness my gf does this everyday and has to queue to get on at j9 then queue from j8 to j5 going at a crawl. Fareham is ok, some areas can be rather ***** and the town has some decent pubs but if you want to any decent nightlife you will have to fork out for expensive taxis to pompy or southampton.

Avoid Highlands like the plague.

Anything else go for a drive to Fareham its 15minutes from you for heavens sake :P

I have lived all around southampton and pompy over the last few years so if you want other ideas send me an email in trust.

Fareham's alright, I live very close to Fareham currently, and have lived in Fareham in the past.

As lucky13 has mentioned, I think driving to Southampton may be a bit of a pain for your girlfriend.. If you're joing the motorway at about 8:30ish towards Southampton, she'll have all of the Gosport traffic to contend with.

Other than that, I like Fareham - Got some shops / pubs / Sainsburys is local - not to far from Portsmouth / Southampton.

Ask Knubje about the drive, I believe he does it every day - although he has a motorbike.

Fareham, wooo :P

Not a bad area in general, as mentioned Gosport traffic is a nightmare try and avoid moving in anywhere around Gosport. Highlands is the pikiest area around my way so i'd say avoid that area, or at least the bad end of the Highlands anyway.

If you see any places you like the look of scout out the area a bit yourself, you may be stuck in the place for a while so best to buy somewhere you like the look of :)

GF starts work at 8 and has to park a 10 min walk from the Hospital so is easily off the motorway by 7:40. She currently drives junction 7 to 3 fine. Its busy, but not at a crawl. It is however only her hours that allow her to do this.

I get the train so don't care about traffic :)

Were just thinking about places to look at the moment.

In that case I live up gudge heath lane in Fareham there is a relatively new cul de sac that is really nice that I live in it is called Sunlight gardens. It is a 15 minute walk to the station and not to bad to get the the motor way plenty of back roads to skip most the traffic. Plus it is only a 30 minute walk into town.

Although dont buy in on my patch unless you want a forum enemy

j/k

You're kidding! I live in Sunlight Gardens also in one of the first few houses that you see when you drive into the place. I bought off plan in 2007, and really love the house and it's convenient connections to the motorway and station. I drive to Hedge End (J7) every day for work and the traffic is heavy, but not too bad.

That all said, Sunlight Gardens does have a bit of the ***** Highlands crowd making trouble occasionally, although (despite initial impressions) that Streetwatch thing that they bought in a while ago seems to have improved things a lot...

Didnt realise there was so many people from fareham on here, i live the titchfield end of fareham a couple of roads behind argos, B&Q etc. Not a bad area at all i find, swanwick station is a 15min walk up the road. Although i think you would need to change trains at fareham if you were going to winchester. Nearest shops to me is park gate. Theres a co-op, iceland and a few other smaller shops. Theres plenty of bus services here too so i can get to southampton, fareham, gosport, portsmouth although they never run that late anymore

I used to live in my parents place in Furneaux Gardens, which is literally 2 mins up the road from Sainsburys Broadcut if you guys know the area. Not a bad area at all but hardly any houses come up for sale in my old street.

At the moment I live in Knowle Village, pretty nice area round here but not real connections, having a car is a must. That said it takes me 5 mins to get to my parents place in the car and 10 mins to get to work.

Well i live in the flats by the park, which means with all this nice weather we get constant amounts of noise and the kids riding bikes through the cars.

You arn't that house on the end that gets cars headlights in the down stairs window everytime someone drives in the road. :P

It is ironic how close a forummer might be though. :D

One major positive that fareham has is that it isn't Gosport. Mind you, to be fair, one major positive of anywhere on the face of the planet is that it isn't Gosport. :)

No, thank god! I think that one that you're referring to was the original show home... anyway, I'm second on the right as you come into the road - a mid-terrace.
It truly is a small world...
