Well after having the Smart for 3 years or so and almost 60,000 miles I fancy a change and want something a little larger and more comfortable.

Pondered spending 10-15k on something like an XF or 5 series however as I'm about to be starting a potentially large house project I thought better of this and thought I should probably spend a little less, esp as I put on ~18k a year ... and so settled on the Accord as you seem to be able to get fairly tidy models for £4-5k.

I'm looking at 2007-2008 Mk7 EX models. Ideally the 2L manual petrol, the 2.4 is just too thirsty for the kind of performance it offers and not a huge fan of diesels (albeit a very decent engine as far as 4 pot diesels go).

Any owners of this model?
What sort of economy do you return?
Anything I should really look out for when buying?
Am I right in thinking if I want to retro-fit something like an XCar box I need to be purchasing a car with the 'Premium Audio' and Nav options?

I'm sure the Mondeo is going to get mentioned in the first post, but I think I'm fairly settled on the Accord ... unless anyone has any extremely left field suggestions!

Edit - oh and are there any decent Wikis/resources for information on the Mk7 Accord? There seems to be very little info around compared to things like my Smart and 350Z!

I sold my Mk7 2.4 a few weeks ago. You're right, the 2.4 is very thirsty! The Nav units can be very flakey and usuallys its the DVD reader failing. If you get an estate, the auto tail-lift needs thoroughly checking too. When I sold mine the motors could no longer open the tailgate but it could close it ok.

No other particular weaknesses, but they are seriously bargey. (IIRC they weight almost 1500kgs)

I've lived with a Smart for 3 years so I'm sure the boot'll be fine - its more the extra seats that would be handy on occasion. Looking at the saloon as I'm not a huge fan of the estates looks.

The civic has a much bigger boot for a big car the storage space in the accord is pretty poor. I didn't think the 2.4 was that bad on fuel though i got 30 mpg mixed driving the civic type-r it replaced did around 26 mpg on the same routes.

A few things i didn't like, handling is over hyped but its ok, performance isn't very good as mentioned its quite heavy certainly wouldn't want one with the 2.0. The steering wheel is huge and the interior isn't that nice it seems to have dated quickly

I have a gen 7 executive sequential 2.4 tourer and love it. Watch for rust on rear arches. Tailgate motors can be expensive and annoying but no issues with mine. Can drink oil if driven hard.

Economy I seem to avg mid 30s with mostly a road driving.

Typeaccord is a great forum for info.

The civic absolutely does not have a bigger boot than an accord estate - you can't be serious about that comment? I'd give you the saloon, but even with the sloped rear there's much more usable space in the tourer than up high in an 8g civic

The shape isn't brilliant but its still better/bigger than most modern estates of its size( Mondeo excepted) Its got a very decent amount of space on offer, albeit the shape is a bit.. Odd for a fwd car

Thanks for the extra details, I have checked out TypeAccord and certainly is the best resource I've found yet!

May post these questions on there but as there are a few owners on here thought I'd ask here first (registered in too many forums already, LOL).

Folding mirrors - take it they were only manual with the drivers side switch? And they were standard on EX but not Executive?

2.4 is a better choice, the fuel consumption between that and the 2.0 is minimal and you get better performance, and their is a flash available for the 2.4 ECU which transforms the performance if your after that. Either way they are lovely cars, and far nicer than most other rivals.

Left field choice - try a Subaru Legacy.

Performance isn't really a massive consideration - I don't want it to be annoyingly slow but in and around 10 seconds to 60 is fine for my daily.

Just taken a quick nose around the Subaru Legacys, seem interesting - its a shame the spec is a little lacking even in the top R Spec B models :( Will keep having a look however as I do prefer estates in general, just not the Accord!
