Will start buy saying it's not for me :p

A friend has decided he needs some V8 in his life (for £10k) and was mulling around the usual American stuff.

I, partly joking, said "how about an 840ci" as he likes BMWs but doesnt want a 5/7 and obviously there's no V8s in the 3.

He hadn't even heard of them but having looked at the ads, he wants one..badly.

So, I'd feel terrible if he took my passing remark seriously and bought one, to find it was a pile of junk. So, the usual - what to look out for, what goes wrong, any fun facts etc.

Awesome cars, certainly a future classic, dated to look at and hugely expensive to run. A real enthusiasts car, so the fact he didnt even know they existed means its probably not the sort of car for him. Its a bit of a labour of love owning an 8 Series.

What do the huge running costs generally consist of? Obviously fuel is quite expensive (he's coming from a 406 coupe HDi 2.2) but he was only quoted 500 on insurance.

He's very much into cars, he's the sort that would lavish it and do everything absolutely perfectly. He didn't know about it because it's not the sort of car he's ever looked at really, not through general ignorance. I'm sure he did know they existed, probably just forgot about them :)

I have to admit I feel a bit of a trouser tingle when I see a picture of one. I don't recall ever seeing one on the road though..

Are they built on a more common platform (such as the e39) or are they built from the ground up as-is?

Tell him to get the 850ci

For 10k?

V12 goodness,

I'm not sure on the description tho...

Lol, that one belongs in the "I'm an idiot and I'm selling my car" thread...

ROFL - they're smaller than they look in some pictures then...

So the general consensus is that they are amazing cars, that many people would give up a testicle to own, but will require very deep pockets to keep going?

Jaguar XKR

840

AMG C43

Porchce 928 s4

Jaguar XJR

Rover 75 V8

Rover 75 V8 Coupe

MG ZT V8

Some type of AMG 55

Rovers are out of the question and he's not a fan of Jags.

Porsche seems like a good shout, the Mercs are worth looking into as well.

I suggested Mustang but his brother's already got one. Well - he had one that he had supercharged, which went like stink until it put a hole in a piston or 2

Why would anyone want to buy one of these white elephants? Might have been a status symbol in the 80s era, but these are just ancient now. Size of a bus too without no space in the back.

I'd rather have a E46 330Ci.

A keen interest in cars so he's wanting something different - couldnt care less about the status symbol.

Sounds better, more comfortable and cooler by a factor of infinity

There's a difference between wanting a car with an awesome image, especially between car buffs and wanting a car to show how rich you are
