Talk to me about VWs

I've currently got a 2010 Mk2 TTS which I'm looking to replace with something more economical. I love the car, it's great fun to drive but I need something more economical and bigger.

I've been looking at 2014+ Sciroccos, 2.0 TDI, Auto with a few extras like Cruise Control. Broadening my search for any VWs that fall into my category, I've found Golfs, Tiguans and Passats.

Is there anything specific that i need to look out for?
Specific models that are worse than others?

Not looking for Estates, they don't appeal to me.

Nothing much wrong with VWs - individual engine models like the 1.4 TSI IIRC can be a bit problematic so worth researching the engine and some you will likely need to do some maintenance and/or replace the turbo at around 70K miles. Other than that no real big issues that I know of.

I'm not sure VWs these days are particularly fun to drive (ignoring certain Golfs, etc.) they tend to be rather boringly predictable and mind numbingly capable of eating up a lot of miles.

(Though I will still probably be picking up either a Tiguan or Touareg at some point)

EDIT: A lot of these are based on the same smaller number of common platforms so not huge differences between them that make specific models better/worse aside from obviously some differences like engine choices.

I knew someone would but bring up Skoda lol. The issue I have is they don't do anything like the Sciroccos. My only choice within their range, for a 2ltr diesel, is the superb/octavia.

But you're also considering Golfs, Tiguans and Passats? Which are also not like a Scirroco :p

And if you're buying a car due to economy and thus presumably cost, Skoda have to be in with a shout. That being said, without going for a significant downgrade, on a purely financial footing, the numbers don't always stack up easily if you end up spending more money on a car to save on fuel - it can be more cost effective to keep what you have.

Edit - (As well as the Octavia and Superb, if you're looking at Tiguans, the Kodiaq is the same platform and the early 2016/17 cars might suit your budget?) Or the slightly smaller Karoq.

You also have the entire Seat range to think of, the Leon for example, even comes in a niceish 'Coupe' bodystyle if you so desire, along with their SUV offerings like the Ateca and Tarraco.

How is a Scirocco any bigger than a TT?

Case in point being that there are two 1.4TSIs, one is a twincharger and riddled with issues, one is a regular 1.4 turbo and isn't really any more or less reliable than any other similar engine. Make sure you know which ones you're avoiding when searching for a car.

I didn't say I was considering it, I stated they fell into the category also but was after feedback.

I have a convertible TT, 2 seats and a very small boot.
By contrast, the Scirocco is considerably bigger when it comes to usable space.

I'm always in 2 minds when it comes to the Scirocco - for want of a better way to put it it always seems like a car where they aimed for something special but then settled for average.

I know what you mean, but personally I really like the design. It's something different from the run of the mill golfs and other 3 door cars. It looks snug as well, which appeals to me.

Not recommending the particular car as I haven't looked at it's details or whether it's over or under priced but something like the 3dr Leon FR Tech, 2.0TDI 184 might appeal?

Def one for me to look into, but they didn't exactly go out with the styling did they lol

No idea what your budget is, but the Scirocco is OLD. Don't think I could bring myself to buy a 2014 version of a car that came out in 2008.

Don't think there is much difference between Tiguans & Passats and the equivalent Skoda and Seat cars. Interiors may be a bit nicer in a VW but not a lot to choose btween them as they all use the same engine and chassis 'platforms', and have access to similar options (albeit there will be options deliberately excluded from Skoda that are available to VW)

I really like the front but when you look at it from other angles it is like they gave up and just made it functional - though some of the R line, etc. models help a bit there.

Old in what regard? Design? It's a 2014 car, not sure what you're expecting but I like them.

Older VWs have a fair few features like parking sensors and satnav feature set which was less common in other cars of the era(s) which is nice as well - some other makes/models didn't start putting that level of feature set in until a couple of years later or so.

I think about 10k would suffice. Looking for 2.0 TDI and auto.

Sorry, as per my edit, it's essentially a car that came out in 2008, and therefore designed years earlier. Just seems a lot of money for an old platform.

I'd say that is less of an issue with VWs of that era - things like infotainment features tend to still be reasonably modern.

But the same money can get you into newer stuff, on a newer chassis platform (MQB vs PQ35 here) and (in the case of that Leon I linked above) possibly even newer tech like Android Auto, Apple Car Play etc. Parking sensors and sat nav isn't something to get excited about on a 10k car.

This. Yes the Scirocco is a MK5 Golf in a (albeit quite pretty) frock, but if you want one, why not get a much older and much cheaper one?

I'd take the much younger MQB Leon over an expensive Scirocco.
