Our one barely resembles a shop these days. Don’t know how it has survived so long. I think that closure is inevitable.

Feel sorry for the people who will lose their jobs, but their business is really odd they don't know what they really are. Used to go their all the time as a kid, but only went there in the last couple of years to buy stuff for uni.

Probably. Electrical retailers always close during a recession. During the early 90's recession it was Rumbelows, Tandy and another whose brand escapes me.
Tempo? They lasted well into the late 90s, possibly early 200s, though I can't remember the exact date they folded. Powerhouse also folded a few years back, so it's definitely not just a recession 'thing'.

Except Tandy lasted until the early 2000s.
1999. The parent company sold them to Carphone Warehouse to concentrate on its domestic (US) business. That company (Radio Shack) still exists.

I don't like any retailer going bust, but some of them are just sadly beyond rescue. Judging by this thread (and something I suspected anyway), Woolworths is sadly one of those. I feel sorry for the employees. :(

Jack of all trades, master of none.

I haven't been in a Woolworths for years for the reason that Supermarkets do everything they do and cheaper to boot.

Same with WH Smith. The Rainforest () does books cheaper and I buy the odd magazine from the local market newsagents.

Another "meh" vote here if they do go, not good for the employees however. The only good thing about the woolworths round here is the carpark as its nearly always empty. My otherhalf seems to like it in there (mainly for the sweets) but I just dont see the point, most things seems overpriced or just general tosh. Ive never seen anyone with a JML Magic Eraser in there basket.

The only time I ever go in Woolworths is at Xmas, because it is the best place to find a good selection of different chocolate selections.

Other than that, it has nothing going for it. I don't want it to close though, as my Auntie manages one store.

Get rid! It's just another one of those large companies that make all town high streets in Britain look the same, along with Boots, WHSmith, Wilko, etc etc

Woolworths tends to be the last place I look when I can't find what I want anywhere else .. or can't think of anywhere else that has it. And even then it's kind of hit and miss.

I can't remember the last time I actually went to woolworths first.

its a crap shop which has had all its assets stripped in the last 10 years.

i believe they sold all / a good few the shops they owned and then re-leased them out. They also are not selling there profitable dvd / media sales section which i believe provides tesco's and some other large organisations.

they also used to be part of kingfisher group which they also split from and then the kingfisher shares went up and woolies went down.

those up top knew what they were doing. I personally think they deserve to go bust though i do feel very sorry for those that are about to lose there jobs.

i go in my woolies every week, would be sad to see it go TBH, another victory for out of town supermarket stores, soon we won't need highstreets

If a company can't compete in today's climate... why bail them out?

Let them die, this is business, not charity.

I work next to one, we use it for drinks and sweets and crips and stuff.

Four toblerones for a quid?
Family bag of Monster Munch for a quid?
Family bag of Pom-Bears for a quid?

Waheyyyy

It will only be a replaced by another generic chain store. No small company could afford the business rates for the size of the stores they have.

If this recession does kick in big time then you can expect to see a lot of the small number of independent high street retailers going down the pan, and most likely replaced by chain stores who can afford to take a loss. I wonder what the government will do for them....... :(
