Hi guys.

Me and my housemates moved into our new place on the first of august. Since then, we've had major problems with the internet (talktalk), and have found out that this is due to them having a 40gb a month download limit. Since all of us need to be on the internet for our degrees and hobbies, this is nowhere near what we need, and as such keep getting restricted.

So, what's the best ISP to get in this regard? We are considering Virgin 60mb, but was wondering if anyone knew any decent ISPs with no fair usage policy, and no restrictions on download/traffic.

We can get fibre in this area, so that would obviously be preferred, but we are all students so can't afford a ridiculous line rental.

Thanks guys :)

Fair usage policy means that if you go over 40gb you are limited. In our case, to about 400 ping to every uk server on bf3

Granted it was almost a year ago but I used to be on talk talk unlimited and we had no limits or traffic shaping whatsoever.

40gb was the standard package then there was unlimited. Are you sure you're on their unlimited package? (It may well have changed in the last year so I could be wrong).

Since AOL took over TalkTalk it's gone down hill. You could phone them up if you aren't in contract but since you're moving in I'm guessing you've just started one up, threaten to go elsewhere. Bethere.co.uk is a great service for gaming, I get pings around 15-40ms on Battlefield 3.

A few I know on talktalk have nevertheless had any issues in the few years they have been with them. Guess its horses for courses I guess.

It sometimes just comes down to how many other TalkTalk customer's are in your area. I know a mate who get's great performance on his TalkTalk line after he phoned up and complained and threatened to leave. Might be worth a try as I said before.

My father in law changed from virgin to sky and then to talktalk. He gets better Internet with talktalk!

I went from TalkTalk to Virgin, The internet was ok with TalkTalk (back in the day 3.5mb/s) we had a contract for 2 years, with a talk talk router. The router packed up after just over a year so we replaced it with a better one. Then the internet just didn't work in our house. so we had phone call after phone call being bounced person to person trying to resolve it. We complained so much they said they would buy us out the rest of the contract. Well one person did, apparently i wasnt or record or anything and we still had to pay, so we complained again. Finally we spoke to a manager who confirmed we still didnt have to pay. Anyway thinking it was all over, TalkTalk debeted our account for the money we would have had to paid to end our contract.

So moral of the story TalkTalk took the royal ****. it was mainly the staff that didn't know anything or how to pass on information. Countless times we were blamed for not having the right things and expecting us to buy a load of crap. I would go to virgin a thousand times over just for the customer service. But then again im sure many ISPs are a lot better than TalkTalk.

I am aware of that however at the link it says:

If you are on the Essentials plan with a 40Gb download limit you can remove this by adding the FREE Unlimited Download Allowance boost.

I can't follow the link further, as you need a talktalk account. Or is this removing an actual limit and replacing it with a different 'fair use' limit? Thought it looked relevant, apologies if not.

Pretty much what you said.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll take a look at bethere.co.uk :)

See, this wouldn't make sense. You're on 40gb so you pay to have have unlimited only to be stuck with a 40gb fair usage policy.

You are either not on unlimited or they have messed up and they haven't removed the restrictions properly.

This is the main benefit of LLU, they don't have to adhere to a FUP.

We used to be with TalkTalk, eventually they got miffed at my usage. Took them long enough.

Moved to Sky LLU, happy days! No limits, no throttling, brilliant speeds 24/7 :)
