Hi,

I have just upgraded to Fibre broadband which goes live next week. I was provided with a Dlink 3782 router. Unfortunately my reliable netgear router I used previously wasn't capable of accepting a fibre connection.

Before plugging it in i have read that perhaps it isn't compatible with people wanting to use there VPN connections into work (which i will require due to remote support work), seems a bit odd that the router wont allow this sort of connection?

Has anyone had any experience of using the VPN through one of these routers successfully and therefore just the odd few who havent managed to get their computer working with the VPN or do i need to look to source an alternative router?

Many thanks,

What's the existing router?

Many ADSL routers are also capable of connecting out using an Ethernet WAN port (or a retasked LAN port). If it does have Ethernet WAN then a secondhand Openreach router would allow you to continue using it.

Ok, think I will have to take the work laptop home and test it then go from there.

Cannot understand why an ISP would supply a modem/router that cannot handle VPN traffic, considering how many people use VPN access to work from home...

ISP's arent obliged to provide you with a router with certain functionality. My Reseller/Wholesale company send ZyXEL VMG1312-B10D routers out to customers and if they want something more advanced then they have the option to upgrade to Draytek 2860n/ac. The router you have been issued is probably complimentary and you can use any VDSL device you want however, if there is a fault with the connection at anytime they may ask that you connect the TalkTalk router to see if they can learn its MAC address on their Core Switch.

Fair enough, however until I received the router I did I hadn't realised that allowing VPN traffic through pertained a more advanced router, thought it was fairly standard protocol hence why i was suprised to read that some people had experienced issues. Was mostly seeking opinions from others on the forum who might have experienced this themselves as talktalk is one of the bigger providers so chances are someone else might have had this happen to them too...

It's surprising that it doesn't allow VPN pass-through. It's something you just expect to be there, not something you'd deliberately check for.

If you look at the D-Link page for the DSL-3782 it supports 'VPN pass-through/multi-session PPTP/L2TP/IPSec'. Have TalkTalk deliberately removed the functionality? It would seem fairly pointless if they have.

Anyway at least they don't force you to use their router so you can do something about it.

Sorry if my post was a little edgy in tone - blame a long day at work! :D. I would expect your standard router to accept PPTP/IPSec/L2TP in passthru however, it does appear that someone has already mentioned this has been disabled - most likely in the firmware. Does seem an odd choice I would agree as any standard TP-Link off the shelf would support this.

Perhaps TalkTalk dont think Homeusers should be using VPN functionality... an attempt to stop people hiding traffic? Pretty pointless if you can switch out the router anyway if thats the case.

Just an update in case anyone else is looking into reported problems on talktalk fibre with the Dlink router, not sure what problem the people who created threads on talktalk forums but has been fine for me in the end so no worries.
