So my tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC has seemingly decided not to work for no apparent reason. I'm getting err99 when I connect the lens to my 30D and the lens makes a short grunting sound. I've tried the usual fixes, cleaned the contacts and removed the battery, next on my list is to leave the battery out for a little longer to drain the backup battery but I'm not holding out much hope for this as it seems to be an issue with the lens (all my other lenses work fine on the body). Does anyone have any other ideas/suggestions or is it well and truly fubared?

I had this on mine (search these forums:)). It eventually went back to the shop I got it from (used) and they refunded me then stuck it up as spares and repairs because it was uneconomical to repair...

Just one check though, when the slight grunting noise occurs do the aperture blades adjust (look down through the front element). Mine went in and out really quickly, making the slight grunt noise.

Thanks, I would have done a search but its a bit of a pain on my phone. Ive managed to sort the issue now I think (hopefully it doesn't reappear). Looking back I think the problem was caused when I was using the lens with manual extension tubes and I was stopping the lens down by holding the dof preview button whilst removing the lens (this would explain why the lens was stopping down when connected). To fix it, I turned the camera on with no lens, then connected the lens whilst holding the dof preview button with the aperture set at f8 and it seems to be ok now.
