This is at F/8 straight out of camera, tell me what you notice :o

17mm at f/8 your hyperfocal distance is 1.92m if you want sharpness through the frame. Did you focus approx 2m in or on the tree?

As above, where did you focus?Anyway, the scene is not easy to judge because objects are at different depths, there may be wind blowing leaves, etc.

Secondly, did you use a tripod with mirror lock up and remote or timer?

Saying that, I would suggest that the image is too soft to be acceptable and looks much like the 2 Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lenses I tried and both returned.

I would look for a 2nd hand Nikon 17-50mm f/2.8

Focus is on the ground between the tree and fence, half way up the frame i believe. No mirror lock up, however tripod was used with timer and there was very little wind. You mention wind blowing leaves, but what you didn't notice was the gate.

Look how the gate goes from sharp to blurry.. Also notice how the right hand side is sharp but left hand is not. I'm currently in processing of returning the lens, at cost :(

Then you are probably returning a lens with no real problem. If your focus point is halfway into the frame then you won't have AS sharp a portion of the fence nearest you.

Go back if you can and focus into the frame 2 metres, recompose and shoot the scene at F8. Everything then 1m to infinity should be acceptably sharp.

But my Canon IS does not do this!, I'm really struggling with sofness with this lens. You should not have a soft left hand side and a sharp right hand side, this is a problem with every photo i've got at whatever range.

Send it back then, but I would still take a hyperfocal chart with you next time you get a lens and not be aiming halfway into the frame at F8 and been expecting a sharp frame.

Surely you should be ironing out technique errors before being 100% certain it's the lens? :)

BTW sharpness aside I like the 2nd image :)

Thanks but i've been doing photography for years and I've never had a lens soft on the left hand side more so in the corner and sharp down the middle and on the right!. I can understand if the photo was soft closer to me across the frame or soft at distance but not in one corner on a landscape shot.

Thing is i've also been testing it on flowers and comparing it to the canon, the canon has a much sharper flower compared to the Tamron

Mine had to go back to Tamron due to a misaligned element which made the left hand side soft. Now it's superb.

From that one shot, it looks as if some element may be misaligned - I've sometimes seen mention of such issues in lens reviews. The lens may need to be recalibrated. Is it still covered by warranty? Not sure about the costs though.

Sounds like mine!, how much would it cost to be calibrated?

That what was nice with photography shops, when they still existed. Got and returned /four/ Sigma 30mm f1.4 before I got one I liked --for free--, they had massive problems to start with at least...

Here your les is obviously not centered properly.. I don't know if it's a transport problem after quality check, but it's a recurrent problem with a lot of third party lens...
