Another thread got me thinking about the Land Rover Tangi which the RUC / PSNI have used over the years.

There is no other cooler 'normal' police vehicle out there. By normal, I mean an everyday sight.

I can't find any better pictures at the minute unfortunately. I have loads at home taken during riots round our way about 10-15 years ago which I'll have to get scanned in

Anyone got any more pics or specs? IIRC they weighed between 3 and 4 tonnes and had a big petrol V8 pushing them along.

Aye, whenever anyone mentions those riots a decade or so ago it automatically reminds me of these.

Awesome looking beasts!

The wheels look vulnerable to SABOT rounds.

SABOT? My old boss used to be in the RUC and he often told me about them. Apparently the tyres were bullet proof, fire proof, puncture proof and to a certain extent, bomb proof. They frequently sat in the middle of a fire in one of these until they had to move either because it was getting too hot or they couldn't breathe because of the fumes. Crazy!

I want one.

I was just throwing some terminology out there, but ive only ever known SABOT rounds to be used by actual tanks as Anti-Armour rounds.. they are designed to tear through tank armour. Your average blokey doesnt have a tank, so I think those groovy Land Rovers are safe.

They are like something out of a terminator/robocop movie. Just sat there - begin bombarded by molotovs , and the guys inside dont even seem to care :D

hmmm wonder where i can pick one up for taxiing the mean streets of Glasgow at the weekends :)

Surprised they didn't use large water cannons in the video you posted. They look great for dispersing riots!

Brilliant looking machines though.

they were fine unless a bullet got into the back of the vehicle - if it did (rear doors commonly left open whilst moving for ventilation) then it riccoched around inside due to all the armour plating

they were also very top heavy due to the armour and fairly commonly rolled over when driven hard and turned sharply
they did make a great raspy v8 growl as they drove past though :)

Intimadating machines, and unbelievably quick off the mark. We had a bunch of the ones in the top pic up here for the NW200 last w-end.

Surprisingly easy to tip over tho ;)
