Hey Guys,

I have a pair of Tannoy 6D studio monitors and one of them seems to have an issue.

First off I just want to say that all the cables and outputs on the sound card (Edirol UA-25) have been swapped around for troubleshooting.

When connected with audio playing and I turn the speaker on via the front switch all I get is white noise from the tweeter and an initial thud from the bass driver, like you were taking an input jack out of the speaker while it was on.

I have recorded a short video to show what the issue is. (Sorry for the lack of camera skills!)

Any idea what might be broken/wrong?

Presumably this noise occurs even without it being connected to anything?

If so, I reckon it's an internal amplifier problem. If they never used to have the thud at switch on, that would suggest that a muting circuit no longer works. (did they have a delayed click from a relay or were they silent and the woofer just moved slightly?) I've had similar noise caused by an input filter capacitor having a dodgy connection, though that isn't necessarily the cause of your problems.

Yeah the sound still occurs when unplugged from any input source.
I was using 1/4" jacks as input so bought an xlr - 1/4" jack today to see if that would solve it...It didn't.

I was thinking that it would be an amp issue because both drivers are producing audio.
If the amp has gone would you say that's the unit done or can an amp be acquired?
Are their drivers and amps individually matched in the factor?

In answer to your question, no the thud never was there, it should turn on and if no input source is playing then it would be silent. I have the 2nd 6D working perfectly.
The bass driver thuds when turned on and of course moves (shown in vid).

What do you think?

Seems to be a thread about this exact problem elsewhere. (big thread about it here) You may be able to fix it yourself if you're able to solder or know someone who can do the work. otherwise it'd be a service via tannoy which probably costs a fair bit.

I found that thread late last night and it's exactly the same issue.
I've downloaded the schematics are will be opening up the unit today to have a look!

Thank you for having a dig on the old net for me Kei, appreciate it :)

Will post again when I figure out what needs replaced!
