cheers for the DIY link, seems easy enough! Yeah turned it off at the mains for now. It was making a funny and annoying noise before this happened though!
that would probably have been the washer sticking before moving to close/open, rather than moving smoothly (although our kitchen tap had that problem when the valve part of the tap started failing and had to be replaced)
Even replacing the tap is pretty simple 95% of the time, like most plumbing jobs it's pretty easy if you have the tools (and it's worth buying them if need be, as they will save you a fortune - they often pay for themselves with the first use).
