The baby 1.4 has developed a lovely tappety noise.. sometimes its there on idle but not very offten.. but its there all the time now when i accelerate getting faster and faster as the revs climb..

Now my question.. is this something to really worry about? how hard is it to fix? how much am i looking at forking out to get it fixed?

its a N-reg seat ibiza and aint worth much lol

Any help no matter how basic or technical is much appreciated :D

easy to bend some valves then? head off job to fix?.. could it be anything else? :)

Very much doubt that, else it wouldn't run properly.

You checked the oil level recently? Give it an oil and filter change and see if it quietens down.

Could be lots of things though!

edit: Tappets will probably be mechanical, so it could actually be a dodgy tappet or two :)

its running fine.. just the noise.. it had a oil change not too long ago.. couple k ago.. new filter etc.. and oil level seems ok.. hhhmm it aint been over heating or anything either..

Any checks i can do to rule some things out? im not scared of alittle diy as long as its possible to sort within 2 days.. :P need the car for work on week days

Are they adjustable on the Ibiza? Change the oil and get them adjusted if so, doesn't cost much to have it done in a garage or buy some feeler guages and have a go yourself.

EDIT
I'm talking about the tappets. Hydraulic ones can't be adjusted, mechanical ones can.

Head off job? or just rocker cover? how much ya think a garage would charge? just a ball point figure :)

No idea what a garage would charge in all honesty, but it doesn't take very long to do.

Rocker cover off so if the gasket is fibrous (most are rubber) it might need replacing.

sounds fun fun fun lol

ill get myself over to the ibiza forum and ask them guys if they are adjustble and about the gasket etc :)

cheers for your help people :)

before you start talking of checking clearances etc.. does it have overhead cam(s) ?

because if it does, there's usually NO adjustment.. if you've got a tappetty noise on an engine with overhead cam(s) it can mean one of many things...

1) valve seats dying
2) valve springs are shot ( they arent closing the valve 100% so the cam 'taps' the valve when it goes round)
3) excessive valve wear - means new valves
4) excessive cam wear - means either a cam regrind, or a new cam..

on the other hand, if its not an overhead cam engine.. it'll have rockers, and tappet adjustment should eb a simple rocker cover off job, your haynes manual (read book of lies) will guide you through the whole process. :)

Not true, many OHC engines have adjustable tappets. However, I'm fairly sure the 1.4 VAG engine has hydraulic tappets.

The noise is very unlikely to be caused by reasons 1)-3) above, but a worn cam/tappets are a possibility. Most likely however is that a tappet has simply got stuck, usualy due to crud build up from infrequent oil changes. Soaking the offending tappet in e.g. petrol sometimes works, but a new hydraluic tappet shouldn't cost much.

im glad someone else has asked this...

my tappets on my puma are horrific when the car has first started... and continue to do so.. UNTIL its got up to full temp and ive given it some beans, then it purrs silently..... can I do anything about that, or is that just noise as the engine is cold?

How would that create the tappy noise? :) no being a **** just dont understand how lol
can actually be quite a common overlook, a loose sparkplug will not seal well on the headand you will be able to hear the valvetrain and combustion noise a lot louder than normal, it can often be mistaken for tappets/lifters.

check your oil grade or change it, sounds like when the engine is cold your oil is too thick tofill the hydraulic lifters, this could be because the oil is old or because you are using the wrong grade.
when the engine warms up the oil thins out and fills the lifters correctly, this can cause premature cam wear, so i would check up on this:)

The cars got 90k on the clock.. and im not sure how well looked after it was before i got hold of it. its just an annoying noise that i want rid of lol.. if its not gonna cost too much to do then ill do it....

ill take a quick look in the haynes now (only just found it)
