Can anyone reccomend me a set of taps and dies (metric) - not too expensive tho

Budget? they wear down very quick so they can be made in various materials, the harder they are the more expensive they get.

You can get a cheap set from ****** (Edit: oops they are a high street competitor) for about £15 but don't get those if you're going to use them a lot. They are great if you only need them once every now and then to get you out of trouble though. Otherwise get a decent set from Machine Mart or Screwfix. Generally the ones in the red metal cases are the batter ones. I've got a Sealey catalogue at the moment and they had a very good selection in your budget.
