I need new discs and pads all round on my MX5, been quoted around £200 for standard oem brakes and £500ish for Tarox branded stuff.

Then on top of either £150 to fit it all, bleed the brakes, etc etc.

Would you go with the Tarox branded stuff or stick with the oem? I occasionally do track days and do some fairly fast 5am road driving during the summer.

My last experience of Tarox was on a Sierra Cosworth, a good while back, in that case, it was a definate yes for ,erm, similar use. :)

Personally, I would go for an upgrade particulary if you do trackdays. I've had grooved discs before and didn't like them because it didn't feel smooth under braking.

Maybe just standard discs and uprated pads?

£500 for pads and discs on a MX5? Are they made from solid gold? I also find £150 for fitting to be pricey. I'm sure you could find a mobile mechanic to do the work for half that, I know I would!

Go with Genuine discs and some uprated pads depending on the type of driving you do. Personally I don't even bother with genuine discs and get patterns with track pads and have never had an issue even on track usage, but your mileage may vary.

Faster and heavier DC2 has no issue with OEM discs at 282/262mm, better pads are a must. DS2500 or Yellow Stuffs will be perfect for fast road and odd track days. Add in some braided lines and 5.1 fluid for a better feel an performance.

Tarox Corsa pads might well be worth it, seem hard to come by though, the Strada don't seem that special.
I've got grooved discs on my car and all they seem to do is make a tremendous amount of noise during braking.
I'd go for OEM discs, and some good pads maybe Ferodo DS2500.

tarox are very good mind....
The only discs around you can use with 406 brembos on a 306 that dont squeal like mad

I'd put a small wager on the experienced track types of the mx5 boards saying original discs being the best and pick a good pad. If you're not going to put it on a track regularly I'd even avoid things like yellows due to the small cold response trade off.

Do you get fade on the road?

I'd avoid yellows on something that isn't going to be used of track as well, but for noise reasons. I found squeaking to be more than justifiable for strictly a road car.

I have stock vented discs and yellowstuff pads all round on my MX5. I've done a few trackdays and had no fade and they are absolutely fine on the road. The pedal feels slightly "softer" when it's cold and raining and you lose some feel but they will still emergency stop, the only difference is after the 4th consecutive hard stop the feel of them improves significantly. I've had others drive the car and hey don't even notice they are high temperature pads.

That's using 5.1 fluid and stock brake lines as well - I really recommend and rate the yellows very highly for all uses.

EDIT: just seen the above post. Mine are greased on the rear of the pads and I have absolutely no squeaking, they're silent!

Buypartsbuy for the discs - £50 all round

OEM on the rear - £50

Mintex 1144/Axxis Ultimates on the front - £60

New brake fluid - £10

Labour if you don't fancy it - £50-100.

OEM discs on the front are my preference but i can't justify £45 per disc compared to £11 from BPB. The latter are good for at least 25k miles.

Yellows are good but are the same price as the better stuff.

The OEM pads are really good too.

I couldn't source the Axxis pads when I was looking a few years ago, and on my first trackday I had oem pads and had massive fade - the pads almost came apart in my hands when I replaced them a few days later as they had become dangerously bad even on the road.

I think my yellows were £90 for the whole set, at the time couldn't find anything similar. Prices may have gone up slightly looking at mx5parts now but still certainly better than the opening post!

Not sensible that, you want to keep the same pads on both the front and rear otherwise you change your braking distribution due to different pads having different coefficients of friction. You will bring it further forward, which will infact increase your minimum braking distance as the standard mx5 setup is (like majority of road cars) set up front bias so the front tyres are the first to lock.

Edit - I found yellows all round for the mk1 mx5 for £119. Apparently cheaper at mx5parts though. :p

I tried Tar-Ox Stradas on my T4 to replace the worn out Mintex M1144s. They were just as good at braking but were far quieter and the dust they left was almost the same colour as my wheels so they didn't look any where as dirty most of the time. To me they were ideal on a fast road car as brake noise used to drive me up the wall with the Mintex setup.

Ive had about four sets on road cars, never been squeaky. The is a small cold response trade off though
