Taskmanager oddity

Does anyone know why holding control down whilst ending a task in task manager kills the process instantly, where-as without it I get the "This program is not responding, do you want to end now or cancel?"

Can't find any mention of it's effect in the help files or on Google..

I think when you end a task in the Applications tab Windows gives the application a chance to close on its own. I am guessing if you CTRL + click End Task it just kills the associated processes.
