Right, so I got a letter from the friendly tax man (HA!), which stated my code has gone from 647L to 738L...

Now, if I understand this correctly, I have been paying emergency tax?

Can someone confirm this please.

I think if you're paying emergency tax the code should be something like BR (iirc)

I'm pretty sure going from 647L to 738L just means you're allowed to earn an extra £910. (Someone clarify)

New job at a junior level... Bad pay, but I need the experiance in the field for later on in life. Been there since the last week of September last year. Past the probation period. Previous job was 2 years in another field.

If I call my local tax office will they be able to evaluate the amount I am owed?

Because this code has been like that (L on the end) for a while now... Talking over a year.

I'm no accountant, but I think that because you have a new lower paying job, you are allowed to earn more before having to pay tax.

The latter bit is correct. It could well be a remedy for having overpaid brought being put on a br code at work.

This is the answer you seek

Well then, bonus times, moving in this Sat, not only do we not pay council tax, but I get a little extra in my pocket!

I must admit, I am terrible for not looking at what I get paid. As far as I am concerned, a standing order is in place to transfer £150 into a Visa account for my personal money, £500 into a joint account with my girlfriend which she also places £500 into. And the rest sits in a savings account...

Can beat that. Just got a 3rd letter from the tax man and my new tax code is K452 :(

At one point I was down to 106L - health insurance and company car killed it. Now back on the normal 605L - although I think Im being overcharged tax still as Im sure it should be the full 647L.

Saying that though I just got a £708 rebate from the tax man for overpayments in the last 3 years (the 3 years since no company car or health insurance) due to an incorrect tax code that I could just never get them to make correct.

I've been on the wrong tax code for a couple of years now despite constantly telling them I have a company car. They never changed the code till the other week and now want 2 years of underpaid tax to be paid in 1 tax year :(

It went from 640L to 230L to K452 in a month. Going to have a word with the FD at work tomorrow to see what we can do about it.

You have probably been paying emergency tax at some point and they owe you money. Your normal tax code would be 637L but they have raised it to 738L so that you will recive the overpayment back over the rest of the year, by not paying so much tax on your earnings.

You tax code will revert back to 647L when the overpayment (it will be in the next tax year) is repaid to you.
