Tax refund?

Hi, not after professional tax advice but just a general question someone on here may have an answer to.

My Fiancee works for a well known mobile phone company in the area. They don't have parking facilities for all staff members so she pays for parking a short walk away. As she is having to pay for her own parking, can that (or part of it) be claimed back from the tax office?

It's £45 per month so over a year that's £540 spent on parking.

Thanks.

That would depend on the specific car parks policies I am assuming, along with her employers terms and conditions.

Does her employment state that she has free on site parking?

I would assume not.

Either her company would reimburse her for parking through expenses or it's just a cost of getting to work in the same way as paying for a car.

I doubt it as travel to and from normal place of work is not tax free, I suspect that would include parking. If she used public transport there would be no parking.
However you could always include it on your tax return and see what HMRC say, worst they could do is reject it I think :)
Andi.

This is interesting actually.

If a company pays for an employee's bus pass/train season ticket, then it's classed as a taxable benefit

So why is paying for an employee's parking (e.g. by providing the service for free) any different

It's probably due to MP's being more likely to be driven to work and their chauffer needing a parking space. So MP's are unlikely to vote for parking spaces to be a taxable benefit.

(Joking... maybe)

It has been argued by HMRC in the past that employers providing free on site parking is a taxable benefit.

But they would never know.
