Did mine last week, for a cheque for £420 in the post today.

EDIT: It's a 10 minute phone call, there's no spending weeks figuring out how to fill in section 51a of article 14b of the OMGWTFBBQ act to try and get it done.

EDIT 2: Here's the phone number: 0300 200 3300.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR NI NUMBER TO HAND WHEN CALLING.

Go get 'em folks!

Tax checker.

That's me providing a valuable service that is. I knew I'd come in handy one day.

Click the link I posted above, insert your NI number and some numbers from your P60 (which you should have by now for the last tax year, if not give your employer a kicking) and that'll give you an estimate.

If either you (if you're self employed) or your employer (if they're incompetent) calculate your tax incorrectly.

Or if you pay emergency tax and it doesn't get claimed back or your employer f's up your tax coding etc etc etc.

You have paid tax you did not owe or are exempt from.

Examples:

If tax code makes you pay more tax than is owed, you will get it back. Even if you don't sort it out yourself, you will get a cheque through the post with some letters eventually.

You pay VAT on goods but are not required to due to the transaction.

Thankfully I have a payroll department who know what they're doing, and a very simple set of BIKs/deductions. I expect I would be owed nothing.

Edit: The checker doesn't take into account differing tax codes from the standard personal allowance. It says I may be due a refund of £358, but I'm not because I have taxable benefits and a correction for underpaid tax last year.

Seems like it's calculated automatically though right?

I'm due £500 last tax year according to that calculator but it says I'll receive a P800 with a cheque in July if that's the case. How come you called rather than waiting for the P800?

I have literally just been looking this up myself and was thinking of posting a thread!

My tax code has been wrong for years, 500T instead of 1100L, which means I've had a personal allowance of £5,000 instead of £11,000 this year. So I'm in for about £1,500 in rebate!! :D

Yeah, our payroll department seems to know what they are doing. Even when we get bonuses, the tax never goes mad, so I doubt I'm due a refund. Will check later with my P60 though.

Is all you literally need your NI number? If so will call them now, I know it off by heart.

Yes I don't have many friends.

Be glad you aren't in USA where they don't really have a PAYE system and you have to do tax returns every year. Most people over-pay to avoid the underpayment fines then get a big refund at the end of every tax year, giving the government an interest-free loan during that time. On top of itemised deductions (optional) and all sorts of other weird stuff.

*is moving to USA in a couple of years* :(

Ah, the fresh smell of a fresh brown envelope from the tax man :-)
